SIAP:

Texas A&M prof and panedmic expert was interviewed by the Chronicle. A bit of a long article but it is oustanding. His quote on Stage 3 of recovery is spot on with my own thoughts and mirrors what South Korea seems to be doing.

What's essential to go the next phase is greatly expanded lab testing both the antigen and the antibody lab testing so we can have a much better view of what's happening in our community. Despite the rapid advancement that's occurred in lab testing over the last month, we're still catching up. And without the lab testing, we're still almost blind to what's really happening in our community.

His comments don't give me a happy feeling about returning to even the "new" normal anytime soon.

Thanks so much for sharing this. Like many of us this situation has turned me into a voracious news hound (and brought me out of lurker status).

By far the best article I've read to date.

I wish this message and strategy was being shared with the public now, as all the news conferences currently feel so reactive, with no direction. Yes I'm sure there's much work going on behind the scenes and we will get through this, but I believe the the public as a whole is thinking what the hell next? And it's a major source of frustration.

To add: The politicians can even absolve themselves from all responsibility and not mention the fact that lessons haven't been learned, and I'm sure they will. I will gladly accept that as 1) we have repeatedly dodged these types of pandemics in the past, and 2) This virus is more difficult to detect/contain due to the asymptomatic nature. There have been plenty of other fires burning in our nation where this hasn't been a focus, I get it.

The phases presented are high level enough that they offer enough flexibility to accommodate for short term blips/struggles while offering a much better view of the long term goals than "we're working as hard as we can on it and we want to open things up soon."

We're going to need this type of messaging to restore confidence in the public and get the economy going again.

Great, incredibly informative article. This was all I needed to hear...

I'm optimistic that in three to six months we'll have (a better treatment for coronavirus symptoms), a therapeutic in our toolkit that can rescue those who become severely ill.

We find an effective treatment, hopefully this summer, and I think that's the key to relative normalcy. At that point, you feel sick, you get a test, you get treatment, and you're good to go again in a week or less. I would not care less if I got it at that point. In fact, I might even actively seek it out under that scenario.

Yeah, I'd rather just get it over with during a time when I didn't have a vacation or important event coming up if I could guarantee it wouldn't send me to the hospital. Even if it took two weeks to recuperate, as long as I was immune afterward, I would just go ahead and get it. (Yes, I would self-quarantine and never expose anyone else to it in this crazy hypothetical!)
