Was at chick fila today and honestly probably about 30 cars in drive thru.
2 people takin orders outside on hand held and swiping card after card... one person has the virus and touches their credit card and hands it to employee to swipe then every card they touch after that could potentially be contaminated.

How long before restaurant drive thrus are shut down or Goto strictly online payments .

I think when all is said and done, that this type of transmission will be considered to actually be rare. Studies looking at people who have done the worst have been in close proximity to large crowds for extended periods thus being exposed to airborne droplets.

If they were passing something at a high rate the numbers of new infections should continue to be spiking now. Quit fear mongering.

Most of the places I've been through, Including the Chick-fil-A I go to near the office, Have been making you slide your own card.

Even the Starbucks drive-through just holds the card reader out the window and you insert your chipped card or swipe it yourself.

I promise you if any fast food chain in this country is having their employees sanitize every 10 minutes, it's Chick Fil A

Quit whining

Yep. Slide your own card and they extended a shelf at the window, they set the bags out and you grab it off the shelf so no touching each other. Very interesting to watch restaurants, especially chick fil a make these changes so rapidly.

Take card back, use sanitizer on card, use sanitizer on hands, don't touch face, wash hands when you get home. No problem.

I always order and pay via the app. I don't have to worry about them hearing/entering my order correctly and I don't have to hand off my card.

And I get to avoid this interaction:

"I would like a spicy chicken sandwich. Not the meal. Just the sandwich"

"Okay would you like to make that a meal or just the sandwich?"

"Just the sandwich"

We went through a smaller chain place (at least for TX) and the person taking the payment from the customers was also the person grabbing the drinks and condiments. I submitted a comment to their website and received a response the next day from the local owner. They changed their procedures that the person taking money would not touch the food.

We went back a week later and, to their credit, they were following the new procedure.

I ask them to take the cheese off and then my order always gets screwed up.

You have to understand that most of these restaurants are going to claim they are doing what they need to do and complying simply because that's what they have to do to stay open.

I've seen numerous FB threads with restaurants owners where they all but admit that they aren't following all the guidelines because it would be impossible to do so (eg. "there's no way two people could be in our kitchen while maintaining social distancing"). In those cases the restaurants shouldn't still be open and serving customers, but obviously they are going to do whatever they can to stay open, even if it means not following the rules.

For a lot of places it's just another marketing angle. Burger joint around here did a few FB videos showing how they were keeping everyone safe and following all the guidelines, etc... We went and picked up food from them and girl came out with gloves and no mask on and walked right up to the passenger side window (that had a passenger in it) to take the order. Despite the credit card being given over the phone, she then had to pass us the receipt book to sign it, etc...

I'm not trashing any of these places - I get it, you have to do what you have to do to stay afloat... Just don't believe for a second that most or even half of these places are actually following all the safety guidelines.

I agree, it's just part of the trade off to having these places open. And they're optional, if it freaks someone out, they grill or whatever, they stay home. Trade offs are going to be what it's all about to move forward though.

I've thought the same OP. I don't think it would be too difficult to make it so that the customer could insert their cards in the machine. Went thru a chipotle the other day and I handed the guy my card then he hands me my bag. It might be low risk but it's an unnecessary one considering everything else we are doing.

I figure it is my responsibility to take care of myself, I go through, do the transaction get my food and then use Purell. I have a sanitizer wipe and I wipe everything down before I eat, including the steering wheel, shifter and anything else I or they might have touched.

When I get out of my vehicle I do this again. Purell sanitizer wipe, It is my job to protect myself especially if I am going there by choice, I can always bring a home made sack lunch and not expose myself if I was really that worried.
