Quote:

SARS-CoV-2 starts replicating in the throat, not the lungs. For that reason, a simple throat swab is enough to test for the virus. There's probably no need for an intrusive, unpleasant nasal swab.

The virus mostly spreads from people coughing on each other. It's a lot less likely that you'll catch the coronavirus by touching the same touchpad or toilet handle as an infected person.

there's no way it's as infectious as it is if it's only spread by being coughed on

R0 is still 2.5, right?

Unless the secondary effect of someone covering their mouth with their hand, then touch door, etc.

Just saw they're thinking 5.8

Gotta sterilize by drinking some good liquor at least daily.

Good Lord...... where did you see that? If that is even close to true, we're doing a hell of a job of keeping things somewhat contained so far.

Here's the recent study based on the Wuhan data indicating 5.7

Side note - if you think the Chinese are lying about their numbers it might be higher...

I will say this there's something weird about how it spreads

it's definitely not just droplet spread by close contact with sick people

but it's definitely not as contagious as a R0 of 5+ or else it'd be much much farther/wider than it is

there's something missing here

yeah and that study doesn't really reflect what's been going on in Europe

we have a much larger dataset now

I saw the 5.x number and my jaw dropped, but I can't believe it. There'd be a much higher case count even with the measures we've implemented, right?

If it was the contagious how are entire grocery stores not getting knocked out?

Wasn't there talk of it being spread in the air via the eyes at one point? That would explain why it seems so much more contagious.

then why aren't grocery stores getting knocked out?

there's something to this to where most casual attack rates are pretty low but some situations or carriers are super super contagious

it's very odd

Interesting. I was traveling in Dallas when everything started getting shut down. I had a sore throat and went in to a local clinic. They did a strep test on me and it cane back negative. Would very much like to know if I've already had it.

From what I've read your eyes would be just as susceptible to intake as you breathing it in, anything you could breathe in can also enter your body through the eyes.

but just because a virus particle enters your nose or hits your sclera doesn't mean you get the bug

there's an attack rate and some methods of attack are stronger than others

This is anecdote. But in my small town outside New Orleans, one of the three grocery stores last weekend had to shut down because not enough workers were healthy. It's a mom and pop place with less resources than Walmart and the chain grocery store in town so I'm guessing they weren't cleaning as much and might not have the same depth of staff but it is happening.

Ya, I've actually been saying this right here on the boards for weeks. There are certain people (and not just broad underlying conditions) that are more susceptible and or more contagious. Genes, DNA, something is making people a higher risk than others (again, other than the already very broadly used "underlying conditions") .

One of these days doctors and scientists will figure it out imho.

the cdc publishing the wuhan 5.7 R0 is why this whole damned thing is baffling. where did the infections go when 5M people fled wuhan before the lockdown started?

the rate of asymptomatics must be huge for that R0 to make sense. if this disease has that level of infectious reach, then the actual death rate is tiny to have the level of casualties we've seen so far.

maddening how much we do not know.

well, we know with quite a bit of certainty is type A blood is more susceptible while type O is pretty the most resistant.

Not suggesting it does, just making the point that the eyes are another absorptive method.

Either it's that contagious and its largely asymptomatic.

Or it's not.

We wont know until we have randomized antibody testing of large groups of people.

This paper went into preprint on February 7. It was an "oh s***" moment for anyone watching. It was clear then that it was not going to be contained and China's numbers were BS. Since then, it's been backed up by a separate University of Kyoto study.

I have seen this said, but the only reference I've seen is to a Chinese study from very early on. Have you seen it elsewhere?
