Felt short of breath the last few days, thought I might be infected

No fever, not really much other than feeling very oddly out of breath and quick to fatigue under load. Really have never felt such a thing.

I, for fun, decided to see how long I could hold my breath. If I can hold my breath for an extended period, then my perceived shortness of breath might be nothing.

I was able without a lot of warm-up to go nearly 3 minutes. That's about what I can do any other day.

That seems to me that I cannot be experiencing a significant decline in function. Maybe I'm still infected, but I guess my pulmonary function is still ok.

Is this a totally silly bull**** indicator?

I can, maybe, hold my breath for 60 seconds...on a good day.

Assuming this wasn't underwater and benefiting from the diver reflex, this is like casually saying you ran a mile in just over 5 minutes. That's an elite time.

You can do it too. Read up on free divers. When the oxygen in your system gets down to about 90%, your brain tells you that you are about to die when in reality it has barely dipped. Just have to overcome your mind.

Lol. I didn't expect the thread to go this direction.

Not a humblebrag, I don't really think I have elite breathholding capability. I guess I'm just a dork.

I've been occasionally practicing breathholding/static apnea most of my life.

The real key is learning to overcome the urge to breathe driven by co2 concentration. You'll want to breathe way before you're low on o2. Even when I breathe pure oxygen, I can't hold my breath too much longer. Hyperventilating before will scrub the blood of co2, which will significantly increase your time.

You just said you've been practicing breathholding most of your life, adding odd details about your attempts with pure oxygen and pre-hyperventilation, and didn't think posting your abnormal breathholding time would go this direction?

I don't think I've ever held my breath more than 37 consecutive seconds. Zero point to it.

That includes swimming.

Well, to be fair, I said all that stuff after the thread went off the rails.

I was genuinely interested in opinions regarding if someone with COVID could expect to hold their breath as long as they usually can.

It seems reasonable that anyone with reduced lunch capacity would not be able to hold their breath as long.

But most people don't have a good baseline of how long they can hold their breath. That used to be a goofy thing we did as kids. I wanna say I could go 1:30 - maybe 1:45 - as a teenager.

So without a baseline, people would not know if their capacity has been reduced.
