317 cases
21 dead

Lubbock County is 5th in state in deaths, behind Harris, Bexar, Dallas and Tarrant. And it has twice as many deaths as Travis.

Got to think spring breakers brought a whole bunch back with them.

Were they late to the social distancing?

Nursing homes?

https://www.kcbd.com/2020/04/09/infected-residents-lubbock-nursing-homes-public-officials-say-peak-still-weeks-away/

Looks like at least three homes had residents that were infected.

IDK. But their death totals are almost twice larger counties.

Spring breakers may have juiced the case number, but they're not bumping that fatality total.

They had at least one super spreader come back from a trip to Spain who was told to self quarantine but chose not to because Murica.

Guessing the same reason Bexar county death rates are higher. Population % of people that are higher risk (Older in the case of Lubbock?, DIABETIC in the case of SA?).

Not to mention the only ones getting tested in many areas of Texas are those that are in really bad shape.

Assisted living facilities and spread in the homeless population lead to much higher than typical mortality rates.

My understanding was he was a study abroad student, returned and told to isolate

Instead went to dinner at restaurant with several family, friends. Symptoms started like the next day.

Also several people went skiing spring break.

Yikes! Bexas is bad. Lubbock is worse.

Dallas isn't doing bad at all ... or maybe a lot more testing?
CardiffGiant

Yeah I modified my original post with the same thought you had. Lot's more testing in Dallas and I assume the smaller cities and more rural areas don't have near as many tests being given. Since Dallas was probably the first "hot spot" in Texas I think they have more testing available at the moment. I expect the numbers in Lubbock and Bexar to start resembling that of Dallas on a pct basis once testing becomes more broadly available.

Have we confirmed she was in fact a super-spreader, or was she just the first known person from Lubbock to have it?

If we're talking about the Tech girl if I remember correctly she returned from the trip (landed in Dallas or Houston?), was told to isolate for 14 days but instead wanted to return home to Lubbock so drove to Lubbock and went to Rosa's Cafe that night and it's there she started to feel bad.

Yeah she should have isolated, but this was also really early in this whole ordeal where no one was taking it seriously enough and before it was made very clear to people that you could be a carrier without showing symptoms.

Not smart, but also not something 75% of college kids wouldn't have also done.

One of my dtr's sorority sisters went on a spring break trip to Spain. While there she hooked up with a young man. They exchanged phone numbers. She comes back to the states. He texts her "I have coronavirus." She quarantines but doesn't get sick. However her brother and father contract COVID-19. The father had to be hospitalized but survived.

To answer the question, unfortunately, we have some nursing homes that are being hit hard. Over half our cases are nursing home related and a majority of the deaths. 221 active cases and 164 are nursing home related.

Please pray for them as they are the most vulnerable and isolated out of all of us. It really is tough to watch how fast it has spread.

Two questions. Your daughter attends Tech or elsewhere? Do you assume the sorority sister was asymptomatic but infected and therefore gave the virus to her brother and father or that they got it through other contact?

UGA. LOL. Do you think the only promiscuous coeds are at Tech? The spaniard was asymptomatic at the time of their rendezvous. The daughter never had symptoms. One would assume the dad and brother contracted it from her.

Over half of the deaths in Bexar are in one nursing home. They have been hit very hard.

Yep. About half of the cases, and I am guessing almost all of the deaths are coming from outbreaks in a few nursing homes. Very sad.

19 of the 21 deaths are nursing home residents.

And based on the Director of Public Health, I believe the TTU student was a female. During the first press conference, the director said "...shhhhh.....the student...did not follow quarantine protocol..."

when you juice the case number community spread goes up and the virus gets into places like nursing homes
Keegan99

But community spread hasn't really gone up. There's not an unreasonably large number of infected in Lubbock outside the nursing homes. Hence why the CFR is around 7%.

This is correct. We have about 55 that are community spread and over 60 that are exposures to an active case. These numbers are not shooting up. Its a few that get it, but the rest are nursing home related. Some good news is that there are 85 that have recovered.

Unfortunately, most of the death totals are coming from the nursing homes.

On call today. 3 new COVID-19 pts sick. From a nursing home outbreak. 2 are residents. One is husband of a nurse who got COVID-19 from the nursing home. Sure there will be many more. Scary.
