that may also be the underlying demographics for the entire population of Louisiana as a whole.

Agree. I guess it means something to see that what we have heard is starting to show up. Not much data has ever been released to the public in other cities reporting on death and the relationship to underlying issues. So i find it interesting if not completely what we would expect.

Exactly. I wish they would compare to % of entire population that is a certain race, has certain diseases, etc.

A 5 second google search shows that it is not (Louisiana is 62% white). Those are demographics for those who had died of COVID in Louisiana.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/COVID19/index.htm

Some more data breakdown by age and by state separately, but not combined, unfortunately.

It starts the clock at 2/1 (I think) and runs through last week.

Interesting to me that people over 85 have ~2.88% chance of dying in any 2.5 month period without Covid and ~2.95% with. The increase in the chance of death for any one person is really small.

92% of deaths over 55, no data on comorbidities. The disproportionate effect on the old and infirm is amazing. The French study of the 9 year old that spread flu and something else to everyone he ran across while infected with COVID-19 and not spreading it is fascinating.

Down the comparison rabbit hole I go...

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr68/nvsr68_09-508.pdf

The increase in accident rate (p.28, accidents broadly defined to mean died by some injury, but not suicide, lots of overdoses, I'd guess) from 1999 to 2017 means effectively that whatever changed there has killed ~50k more Americans.

There is more info on that site showing the deaths in each Parish compared to the racial makeup of the parish.

Do they have the inverse stats available? Basically what percent of people with each of those conditions died from the virus?

But New Orleans is 60+% black - which was the hardest hit area.

New Orleans is right at 60% black according to the last ACS.

I didn't look at all the numbers, but from reading the thread, it looks like the ethnic make up of deaths in Louisiana more or less match the ethnic make up of the population.

Small number under each race is number of deaths. Large number under that is population of that race in the Parish.

So basically every parish black people are infected at 2x or more the per person rate of white people, with the exception of two.

if mardi gras parades were the culprit for initial spread and overwhelm, what is the racial breakdown of attendees?

I'm concerned for the black community, not only in New Orleans and Louisiana, but everywhere. Both the community's housing and work situations suggest it'll be more susceptible to infection.

Denser living situations, and tend to work in the service industry.

Attendance from locals more or less will follow the local demographics.

But the tourists are overwhelmingly white. And they're the ones who are more typically packed in like sardines along Canal Street during parades and while partying in the French Quarter. Some locals will be found among the crowds, but many enjoy the Mardi Gras season in quieter areas.

Zulu is the African American crew, and the crew's membership has been hit hard by the virus. Although, I've not seen anything that has tied that specifically to Zulu's parade or associated events. It might just be a coincidence.

If the virus was introduced into a Zulu event, that would certainly put the black community at higher risk.

It's not just about attending the parades. The majority of the hospitality and service industry workers in New Orleans are black. They would've had numerous contacts with tourists during Mardi Gras season without ever going to the parades.

I'm not up with NO/Mardi Gras culture, but I presumed that there were an extremely high frequency of private parties at precisely the wrong time as well.
