Quote:

London (CNN)A small but rising number of children are becoming ill with a rare syndrome that could be linked to coronavirus, with reported cases showing symptoms of abdominal pain, gastrointestinal symptoms and cardiac inflammation, UK health care bosses and pediatrics specialists have warned.

On Sunday, the Paediatric Intensive Care Society UK (PICS) tweeted an "urgent alert" from the National Health Service England about a small rise in the number of cases of critically ill children presenting "overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki disease with blood parameters" -- with some of the children testing positive for Covid-19.

The urgent alert, sent to UK general practitioners by National Health Service (NHS) England warned that over the last three weeks, "there has been an apparent rise in the number of children of all ages presenting with a multisystem inflammatory state requiring intensive care across London and also in other regions of the UK," the Health Service Journal first reported Monday.

The alert added: "There is a growing concern that a [covid-19] related inflammatory syndrome is emerging in children in the UK, or that there may be another, as yet unidentified, infectious pathogen associated with these cases," HSJ added.

In a statement sent over the weekend to medical professionals who look after critically ill children, PICS said "the cases have in common overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki disease with blood parameters consistent with severe Covid-19 in children. Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms have been a common feature as has cardiac inflammation."
Kawasaki disease, also known as Kawasaki syndrome, is a rare childhood illness that causes the walls of the blood vessels in the body to become inflamed.

Man I hope there isn't an association in the end. Up till now, the data in kids has been mostly good.

Just so I understand, is this relating to children who are already sick, or healthy children developing these issues and Covid?

If there was a significant impact, you would see hundreds of thousands of kids in the hospital. A few in the UK is not alarming to me.

This is likely a rare complication. The problem clinically with COVID is prolonged fever > 5 days is very rare for a viral syndrome. When we see > 5 days of fever with no real explanation we have to consider Kawasaki's and leukemia. However, with pediatric COVID, 9-10 days of fever seems the normal in symptomatic cases.

There is a very limited body of data however.

I wonder if it is the native population or the immigrant population of children that are being impacted more?

I had Kawasaki as an infant in 1982.

I wonder if that makes me higher risk to contract covid or have symptoms if exposed?

That is a very small group of people there is no way to study or even predict that outside of case studies hehe.

Glad my mom never caved in to my demands for a Kawasaki.

I know you are making a joke but that is the name of the syndrome.

Yes while pretty rare it was even more rare in 1982 when i was born. My father thought the dr was joking when he told them what I thought they had.

Only treatment for an infant was high doses of baby aspirin. Hands and feet peeled like onions

Why say it is conspiracy stuff?

No reservoir has been found and there is a plausible link to a lab that may have changed the RNA of CV19. Do I really to say or add more to what the experts in the trenches have recently said ? As of last Friday, the best of the best doctors were humbly saying they still have much to learn and improve as they deal with Covid19.

So it is not a conspiracy theory, it is critical thinking and reasoning.

There are about 6,000 kids annually hospitalized in the US with Kawasaki.

In NYC, you would expect about 180 annual cases, as a share of US population.

That works out to... 15 kids a month in NYC.
