So, has anyone heard any new info or research on how this disease spreads? We have started ordering to go food from restaurants and delivery, but it does have me a bit worried. I believe this type of spread is called "smearing" but I could be wrong.

How have you been getting food previously? By doing trips to the grocery store?

If so, I would venture to guess that getting takeout is just as safe, if not safer than going to the grocery store

I'd feel better about doing pick-up myself versus having food delivered. One less set of hands on the packages. One of the first super spreaders of the virus in Italy was a delivery driver.

I just want to commend you on your self isolation discipline.

We made it without take out food for about 5 days in early March. We quickly caved and have been ordering regularly since then.

It's funny, my HS Senior signed up for Doordash to try to make some $$$ in all of this (Winners/Losers) and it turns out the main time they want him to work is the morning. I asked why, he said "Because everybody is ordering from McDonalds and Chick-fil-A, and wanting it delivered". I was a bit dumbfounded, as to why people can't drive themselves to get their damn breakfast biscuits, and are OK with paying $14 for $8 worth of food, but good for him.

Anyway, he made $80 in 3 hours. Gotta love Austin.

We've gotten food delivered lots of times the past 7 weeks. We take it out of the containers and put in on our own plates just in case.

We've done delivery and curbside. I consider the risk minimal. I also don't change and shower after weekly grocery store runs but I understand some people do.

Not understood completely. But 2 modes of transmission. Aerosolization of respiratory droplets and touching surfaces with viral particles then touching your face. I've read articles touting both methods as being superior in transmission. IMO sustained intimate contact over 20 minutes with an infected individual is highest risk. Getting infected from a keypad while paying for your groceries much less likely. If everyone wears masks transmission rates drop 90%.

You're being quoted on this elsewhere. Do you have a link to a source we can read?

Not anymore. Ham-fisted mods deleted the whole thread rather than...I dunno...do the work of deleting just the offenders.

Like me for this post, no doubt.

Yea I don't believe the 90% number unless they were all N95 masks, worn properly and disposed of properly.

I read about it earlier in the month. I can't find the link now sorry. That is based off the NIH Japan study of asymptomatic transmission. The large reduction in transmission by using surgical or cloth masks is theorized in asymptomatic patients. Studies have been done in smaller groups of symptomatic patients with coronavirus and influenza and have shown a much lower although improved reduction in transmission. This is why the CDC changed their recommendation recently for all to wear surgical or cloth masks in public indoor places when feasible. One would hope/assume that symptomatic people are not out in public, even with masks on.

My wife was reading something similar from a Taiwan Medical Journal. The condense version is medical folks who worked with in a 2 ft zone of an infected patient for more than 5 min were far more likely to get infected if they wore no mask then if they donned a mask.

I pretty certain wearing glasses would be helpful as well.

It was moved to forum 16, which mortified me.
Not productive or helpful for anyone concerned.
Marcus did not in any way deserve to have his handle in a title.
I requested mods kill and disappear it.
They did, thankfully,

I'd be interested in reading whatever it was that prompted you to post the original 90% number. And I'd like to see some follow on data regarding qualification as to HOW we wear a mask. What I've seen going on in my town is a total clown show demonstration of how to catch every disease thrown at you.

With this statement:
Quote:

Among the samples collected without a face mask, we found that the majority of participants with influenza virus and coronavirus infection did not shed detectable virus in respiratory droplets or aerosols

I'll have trouble justifying the inconvenience and potential for other cross contamination opportunities presented by mask wearing.
