"Texas A&M intends to reopen its 11 university campuses for the fall semester and be ready for football, Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp told the system's presidents in a phone call Thursday morning. Texas Tech University has also announced that it plans to resume on-campus classes in the fall. Both schools said they are drawing up precautions to keep students safe while bringing them back to campus.

Sharp wants to "make this happen," according to an A&M spokesman."

Having football and having football with crowds are two different things. I still don't see a viable way to have football with crowds at this point however I suppose you could spread out the student body across the stadium in some manner as they are all more or less the same risk?

Outdoor daytime games seem at least somewhat viable.

Fun thought, maybe Jerry world game gets cancelled for one in Kyle/Ark?

Jerry would somehow bankroll that into a 10 year extension of the game to make up for the one year of lost revenue.

This is how I see it:

1. No football without students attending classes.
2. No classes until we have medication.
3. There will not be any games played without students in full attendance. It will be an all or nothing approach.

I have very pessimistic thoughts about any of the above happening. Not because I think it would be stupid, but I don't think people are going to be over the fear by them. I still have FB friends crying about how scared they are.

If we don't have football, that means no school - and Vice Versa. If that happens, BCS will die.

I'm hoping cooler heads prevail.

The dynamic is going to change this Fall, and it's not all about football, or even primarily about football. There will be schools that open on time this Fall. Schools that do not open on time risk losing students to those that do, and given the financial pressures that many schools face, they simply cannot afford to be closed when others are open. It will sort of be like banks were before federal deposit insurance was created in 1933. Back then, if a bank didn't stay open during a run, it was doomed because depositors lost confidence and would withdraw everything at the first opportunity.

Good news!

But, really, the water tower is the best photo the Texas Tribune could find for the leading image of the story? C'mon man.

Current student here and neither my fellow classmates (at least people who I know) or I have had a positive experience with online classes. We want to go back, actually learn in person, see our friends, enjoy the college experience. Don't try to deprive people of that due to your fear. Also, it's four months away. There will definitely be more therapeutic drugs that get approved for use to help with COVID and our medical systems will be ready.

Slightly concerned about the theory that this thing will come back harder in the Fall. We've been celebrating Dr. Fauci comments on Remdisivir, he also said the Fall is going to be challenging.

EDIT: The real life negatives being obvious, the most trivial thing I've been bummed about is missing football this Fall...

EDIT 2: Not trying to poo on this announcement, I hope to every conceivable higher being that we are back in the full swing of school and college sports this fall and everything is hunkydory.

Are they also crying about being scared to drive on the highway? Because the odds of them dying there are similar.

I would assume the people who are posting on the internet in fear of coming back will create a massive overestimation of the amount of actual fear people have about things getting back to normal.

The thing is I don't think Fauci ever said that specially COVID-19 will be worse, he said that COVID coupled with the start of flu season would make it challenging and could pose problems.

I'd be a Kyle in September. Hell, I'd be at Olsen this afternoon.

Yes I think there will be more infections this fall in the much talked about 2nd wave but by then I think the fear factor will be waaay lower. I hope so anyway.

As a counter to the above, in March Aggie Parent FB pages were full of moving students back home because it is safer, parents who leave their 'kids/babies' in college station were foolish, college kids can't 'adult' well enough to be socially responsible, blah blah blah blah.

Since the news hit of TAMU having class in the fall, so far all Aggie Parent page comments appear thrilled with the news. Lots of whoops and relief.

Exactly. Tell your scared friends they are still allowed to stay home for as long as they want. The rest of us will go out and do the heavy lifting.

Unfortunately I think this is just a ploy to collect tuition deposits for the fall semester which are due tomorrow, May 1st. All of the colleges announced this at the same time for a reason.

Just like its too early to cancel anything for the fall yet, its also too early to really know what the situation will be like to make an educated guess on what colleges look like for Fall 2020.

Was about to post same. Decision makers realize they have to give hope for Fall classes or half the freshman class and a lot of others will just be taking their basics on-line at the local community college instead of paying A&M tuition.

Another big issue is apartment leases. Those have to be negotiated and signed.

May 1st is the deadline to decide and make your deposit.

As others have said, it's not a coincidence these reports are coming out right now.

Can you elaborate? My son is enrolling in the fall, and we've found nothing online about any fees due. We've been looking diligently, but can't find anything.

What about applications for financial aid for the fall semester? Are those due soon? Maybe that influenced the decision to announce today.

I'm not saying specifically at A&M, I'm saying at most schools.

Sorry if I worried some people needlessly.
