I think its still too early to say that this doesn't affect kids or doesn't have long-term health issues.

Or maybe....just maybe realizing that you can send a kid to the ICU will make people think "you know maybe wearing a mask isnt such a huge sacrifice. Maybe it is just a minor inconvenience that could keep a child from going through this. I mean **** old people and cancer victims...they got a chance and dont really contribute to the economy but I mean I generally like kids...so maybe I will not try to make them needlessly suffer and wear a mask."

Just maybe.

15 patients out of 3.58M cases globally? I read maybe a handful in the UK as well...

Funny how people have such different responses on the validity of "anecdotal" evidence depending on if it fits their current view of the severity of the virus or not.

In before - "I bet they had preexisting conditions. The healthy kids should be fine."

From everything we know, this virus is extremely less severe and lethal to children. If we had the guts our grandparents did we'd have "chickenpox sleepovers" again to give them immunity.

Is this the latest fear narrative combined with being long term disabled after COVID? Most kids don't even show symptoms if they have it. Makes sense for them to try and scare the parents though to keep people at home.
Means they're getting to the last couple of pages from the playbook.

I'm waiting for the "Covid causes autism" outrage. That's when I know they are out of ideas.

"No deaths have been recorded, and although many of the children tested positive for the coronavirus, others didn't."

So we really don't know what the heck is going on.......

I take it you won't be driving anymore and if you have a swimming pool you have filled it in. Those two steps alone will go a hell of a lot further in saving a kid's life compared to wearing a stupid mask.

If the fact that a statistically insignificant (from a policy-making or modeling perspective, let's be grownups) number of children may have developed a serious complication from COVID19 is influential at all in our public debate, then we are in trouble.

Are we making decisions on science or feelings?

If it's feelings, then a statistically insignificant but anecdotally potent report like this is going to be allowed to influence our policy decisions and we will end up with wrong-headed, counter-productive strategies like keeping schools closed was, is, and would be.

And, please, for all of the complaining about "forum 16" on here this is the second thread I've seen where you're the first person to go off the rails. Unhinged isn't a good look for anyone, and histrionics on either side don't help the discussion.

Good grief, the guy posted one sentence and a link and the politics forums swarms with their fresh talking point.

Avoid the forum? Ignore the post? Critique the actual article/data?

Nah boys - we need to go full on blast to shout this down as quickly as possible!

In no way is that a fear-monger article:

"As those countries are weighing how to reopen schools, health experts said the small number of these unusual cases shouldn't prevent authorities from doing so."

Sometimes officials have to give answers such as: yes, we've had those incidents/no, we're not sure of a connection. The same Kawasaki-type symptoms were reported out of the UK last week---I'm sure reporters have been hammering them for answers over here since then.

I did critique the data. Driving and drowning are #1 and #5 cause of childhood deaths. If we're going to clutch our pearls thinking of the children let's at least do it in ways that will have an impact. Destroy all your guns and you will really make an impact.

But feel free to continue running from dissenting opinions that hurt your feelings.

Alternatively, a thread title and OP that doesn't begin to give the proper context to the information isn't really setting things up for a good discussion.

And then 2 of the first 3 responses, including the first one to really take things nasty with the "heartless *******s don't care about anything but themselves" trope, that responded in a political context were clearly biased toward a lockdown perspective.

The lack of self-awareness on both sides of this "debate" is so enormous it's gotten humorous. It's like two caricatures at this point, the flip sides of the same coin.

This. The fact is that there wasn't one need for a "wear your mask" freak out post. I honestly don't know why that reply was even starred or is allowed to be kept in this thread. No one was saying they won't wear a mask before the post and a lot of unwarranted venom in this and every reply I've seen from Idaho.

Idaho,

We get you want others to wear masks. Fact is, in some states it is not a law to wear a mask. B/c of that, there will be many who don't. Shaming and griping about it isn't the way to convince others to wear the mask. If anything, it's doing the opposite as it's human nature to be pissed when others shame them, try to force them to do something. You'll get a lot flys with honey.
