Salons May 8 and Gyms May 18. In salons, masks are strongly suggested but not required, 6 ft social distancing in waiting areas.

For gyms no masks (yah!) but latex gloves will be required. Reason given is one could touch their face than touch equipment. Ok, that wasn't thought out in my mind as one still touched his face and than touched equipment. The germs would still spread, glove or no gloves. And sweat doesn't transmit the virus. One would need to replace their gloves if they touched their face as far as I'm concerned, medical folks can chime in on this for their opinion. Also, equipment must be sanitized after use, and as we can't expect gym employees to follow everyone around, that'll be on the members which I know I'll be watching. Sad it took a pandemic to get some gym members to have to do what they should have been doing all along. Equipment brought into the gym by members (mats, your favorite Texas Power Bar etc) must also be wiped down before and after use (wouldn't you wipe your own stuff down before you take it home?)

The gloves thing is stupid. Serves no purpose unless you are replacing them multiple times during the workout. Oh, and yeah, deadlifting with latex gloves on should be fun.

Latex gloves that will get shredded while lifting, and pointless from the get go. Someone can be pouring sweat, wiping their face and mouth with a towel and touching the equipment, but all is well because rubber gloves. Idiotic.

Gloves. The dumbest GP protection of all.

I'll be honest here, I won't be wearing them unless a "concerned" individual makes a stink out of it, nor will I require anyone to who is barbell training for safety. It won't prevent the virus from being spread unless, as you say, they replace the gloves throughout the session. Dumb b/c they won't. I have a feeling this was a compromise as the mask requirement wouldn't work for those training hard.

Another thought was that they want gloves to remind you not to touch your face. But this isn't how Abbott put it. But if that's the case, allow chalk. I won't touch my face at all with chalk, as if it gets in your eyes, bad deal. Plus chalk dries the skin, which would prevent bodily fluids from getting on anything. As a wise sage once said, if your gym doesn't allow chalk, find another gym.

Texas Reps. Briscoe Cain and Steve Toth both got haircuts earlier today. Guess Abbott felt he needed to make the judgement today so he didn't look like he was losing control.

These kinds of asinine restrictions really make me question who is advising our city/state/national leaders. It's laughable.

Obviously people who have never picked up a heavily loaded barbell off the floor.

I think it's just full finger gloves, I didn't see anything about latex.

It is vague. Honestly I doubt most gyms really police that. Some might. But the way Abbott made it sound, it was latex. Hopefully there's some confirmation.

Also, there must exceed 25% capacity. And locker rooms most remain closed and no showers can be used yet. Those should be interesting as well. All of this is temporary obviously. Probably gone by phase 3 or things will at least slack a bit by then. There are gyms that already opened. Starting Strength's main gym in Wichita Falls opened a few weeks ago. Rip has been very vocal in being against a lock down. 2 weeks ago he just decided to open his facility. Hasn't been fined or warned at all, as far as I know. His video on how to open is pretty funny.

How is it even possible to workout in latex gloves and wouldn't that be hoarding PPE to workout?

Agree it won't be policed and good thing those gym owners don't live in Dallas, they'd be in jail.

The best was a regulation out of California. The rule was you are allowed to play badminton but only one person can play. I'll try to find the link to the order

I don't think latex gloves are considered PPE, they're pretty commonly available for cleaning and other activities.

We go to a spin studio in Austin that's debating reopening, they can pretty easily add extra distancing but wearing gloves while sweating profusely on a bike...no thanks.

It seems like hand washing/sanitizer would be generally more effective than how most people use gloves.

You could actually make the case that a virus is more likely to survive and be spread on a non-porous surface such as latex gloves as opposed to a more porous surface like skin.

Why the f*** were we ever limiting outdoor activities and needing the government to "allow" us to freaking go outside. This isn't how viruses overwhelm hospitals.

Yeah these restrictions are really difficult for a climbing gym. You really can't clean off the equipment (walls) between uses either. I'm curious how they can open with those restrictions.

I don't think a lot of gyms will open with these restrictions. You can't access the lockerroom or showers. You have to wear gloves that cover your entire hand. You can only be at 25% capacity. Even if they do open I don't think they will be able to charge folks or make any money in the process. People will cancel before they let that happen.

I think a wiser approach would have been to make gyms operate on an appointment basis temporarily, or split up your membership pool with varying times of access to stay under the 25% capacity rule. Space out your equipment, or only open every other machine. Have a list of guidelines along with a waiver that gym members must sign assuming risk. Then go for it.

Our country is run by nerds who don't lift weights, it's not a shocker these people don't understand anything about physical fitness.

Lmao doing a deadlift or a bench press with latex gloves on. These people are morons.

I watched the press conference and Abbott specifically mentioned throughout his discussions with business leaders on how they could safely re-open as part of the process to re-opening. He specifically mentioned that bar owners needed to approach his administration with some ideas for how they could safely open before he could advise it.

I am a person who goes to a gym 5-6 days a week and have been sorely missing it. When the outbreak was getting serious, I kept doing my workouts. I found it to be the most anxious activity of anything I did. I tried to wipe down my barbell before using, but then I realized all the plates I was handling would need to be wiped as well as I kept taking those on and off. Also, lifting causes people to breathe heavily, spit, grunt and do lots of things that made me uncomfortable. I wish they would require wearing a mask in the weight lifting area since it's not a true aerobic activity. Finally, social distancing seemed almost impossible when doing anything with dumbells, because all of the bros love to line up in front of the dumb bells for their exercises in the mirror. It was impossible to steer clear of people while lifting to go get the dumbells i needed for certain exercises. I would typically take them to another area of the gym to steer clear of people, but I found it troublesome.

I don't see how gloves help at all. I don't see a single mechanism that gloves can do to prevent infection. The minute I wipe snot out of my nose with my glove or block a cough my glove is pointless. At least a mask would physically block me from doing things like that.

I also swim a regularly and I felt pretty safe doing that. I've read that the chlorinated water kills CV. As long as it's one person to a lane, I never felt there was much opportunity to get infected.

Closing the locker room and water fountains seems like a good idea. I made sure to pack all my stuff so I wouldn't need to do that anyways.

That's likely what it is, but the problem is, that sense of safety actually likely makes it more likely to spread. You forget that you still need to change out the gloves and touch any and everything in your path. Much easier just to periodically wash your hands than it is to change out gloves after every new equipment you touch.

My golds gym sent email yesterday stating they were opening on May 18 with no locker room or showers. I think we will be cancelling as I don't feel the price is worth all the restrictions and we have found a solid routine at home with a bike, elliptical and band setup.

Really? The one by me has (had?) signs for something like $10/mo flying all around. When my wife taught at the school next to it, she refused to get a membership there (I wanted to switch because it was much cheaper than were we were) due to all of the kids at her school having memberships there.
