Those of you who lost your sense of taste/smell, was it a gradual thing or all at once? I have no other symptoms but today my sense of taste is at about 50%. I put something spicy on my salad and it was very bland. Just now I started chewing some peppermint gum and even though I can feel the cooling sensation in my mouth, I can't actually taste the flavor of the gum.

Sense of smell seems to be fine right now, which I find peculiar since it is such a big factor in taste.

I was confirmed positive three days ago. My sense of smell/taste has not been affected. Hope your lungs are holding up. Thankfully, mine are fine.

COVID-19 anosmia reporting tool: initial findings

It is usually an early finding. My understanding is that, when it occurs, it is usually fairly significant and as stated in most cases it is of sudden onset.

So what were your symptoms to make you feel you needed to be tested?

I was asymptomatic for my first two tests (which were both negative). I was tested because I was exposed to two co-workers who tested positive.

I knew something was up as I began to become symptomatic, specifically...

Low grade fever
Dry, persistent cough
Chills and uncontrolled shaking
Muscle pain

My third test was positive.

Seems a lot like H1N1 when I got it just 6 months after graduating from college. I was shivering and shaking so bad it was tough just to get up and use the bathroom, and I had to immediately get back under the covers. I was sick like this for like 4 days.

My sense of smell and taste seem off. I don't have any other symptoms, but I was exposed to a couple who have coronavirus now. Tomorrow would have been the 14th day since the exposure.

I've already called and have an appointment at the local hospital to be tested in the morning.

I didn't lose my sense of taste, but my wife and brother in law did. My wife lost hers rather suddenly and it lasted two days. My BIL lost his abruptly as well and that was 6 weeks ago. He still only has about 50% of his taste back. That's the only symptom he has had.

I lost most of my sense of smell about 1990 from a flu or something. After that, I couldn't tell the difference in taste in just about anything. Then one day I stopped at an Indian restaurant for lunch and found that I could taste their food! Indian food became my favorite food after that.

Over time, some of my sense of smell has come back. The odd thing is that I get phantom smells from time to time. The most common phantom smells are of burning electrical wires and of wet burlap. I used to wake people up at 2 am to have them come help me look for burning electrical wires, but nobody else could ever smell them.

Even though I hadn't notice any issues with my sense of smell today, I did notice that I did seem to smell both burning electrical wires and wet burlap this morning.

By the way, after losing my sense of smell for a number of years, the texture of food became very important to me. If something did not have the texture that I would expect for that particular food, I couldn't eat it at all.

At the moment, I smell something acrid, but I don't know what.

So whatever sense of smell I have managed to claw back over the last 30 years is there, but not working correctly, today.

My sense of smell seems back to normal today. For lunch, I had a cajun crab and shrimp stew that was very good.

I had my test this morning and should hear the results in two or three days.

Not well. I had three days in a row of no fever, and thought I was well on my way to recovery. Yesterday, around 5 p.m., my fever came back (100.4) as well as the chills, shakes, and dry cough. Last night, for the first time since I've been symptomatic, I had some ever so slight breathing issues, but I think that's because my chest is sore from all the coughing. And my entire body aches. The nurse at the County Health department said this is not uncommon. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Thanks for asking.
