There have been a lot of nurse deaths in NY (mostly in their 60s) and I'm curious if many of them were exposed to high viral loads in a "Code Blue" situation. The LA Times published a story the other day about a nurse in her 60's who contracted Covid after doing CPR without an N95 and she died.
Our hospital now has an across-the-board policy essentially delaying ACLS until a specific team arrives and dons Covid PPE. This includes the heart floor which has not been taking Covid patients. So if we have a non-covid heart patient go into Vtach we have to designate one person to do CPR and no one else, even the charge nurse, is allowed into the room to put the defibrillator on until the rapid code team arrives. So in the past a quick shock (less than 2 minutes) could happen but now it may take 10 minutes or more. Death rates for in-hospital codes are going to go way up.
