My Father-in-law is 67 and still works at a beef plant in Nebraska. He services most of the equipment in the plant. He called my wife last night and informed her that he had tested positive for Covid a month or so ago, but has already recovered and is back at work. She was annoyed he hadn't told her yet. He had extremely mild to no symptoms and had to fight to get tested. Others at the plant had worse symptoms and did get tested easier but none have died yet. I suspect most at the plant have had it. He is also a heavy smoker ( but that seems to not be an issue according to some studies now,) but he is in very good health beside that, also has O- blood type.

Yeah, this virus is so very interesting. I'm going to be very interested in seeing what numbers in meat packing plants look like in a month in regards to hospitalizations and deaths.

He had what the majority will experience if they do contract the virus. He is of that age group that is among those most severely effected. But even within that group, most will recover from the virus.

It's hard physical work working In a meat packing plant.

I'm starting to wonder if the workers are in good shape, maybe helping with their reaction to the virus.

I have friends and family that do hard physical work but it's easy to out eat your exercise.

And has it been discussed around here that nicotine/tobacco is actually a good habit to have right now? Nicotine patches being prescribed? Seems insane to me.

It has been awhile but, yes, there was speculation at one time that certain blood types seemed to be more susceptible to the virus than others. I believe there is some discussion buried in the Dr Rev's thread about this. Not sure, however, what the latest is as haven't seen anything in awhile.

The tobacco is a new twist to me though!

Everyday seems to bring out new info on this virus. It really is hard to keep up with everything.

Probably because a majority of media sources now are random tweets with no vetting and they could potentially say anything. It's an extremely lazy or non-ethical institution now it seems.

Well, define "out eat" in terms of overall strength. As a trainer, I honestly would rather some "over weight" people to focus more on their strength and less on weight loss, which is entirely a diet situation. Yet people focus on cardio thinking they will lose weight. Maybe these guys' strength counters any extra body fat they have. Don't know.

I thought smoking was a big reason for deaths in Chinese men?

A French study showed better outcomes for smokers

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/05/03/covid-19-fact-check-caution-urged-study-virus-smoking/3055378001/

Our rating: More information needed

More information is needed in order to rate the claim that nicotine substitutes could help in fighting COVID-19 symptoms as true or false. It is possible that nicotine substitutes could aid in fighting the coronavirus but findings from the French study were very preliminary and more research is needed. Furthermore, many other studies say differently, and researchers have warned against jumping to conclusions from the study.

No data coming out of China is accurate. Doesn't mean that it isn't true, just that it cannot be assumed to be true. They cooked their books so thoroughly that none of their data can be trusted because it's been so selectively chosen.

It was widely speculated here early on that smoking was a big reason that France and Italy were so bad (and why we shouldn't expect death rates anywhere near theirs).

I wonder if the CCP wishes they had pushed their fake death toll up around 10k-ish, so that it would be more believable.

turns out bad outcomes aren't really related to smoking status

My experience in Germany is that they smoke a lot as a population also, so it was surprising Germany did pretty well with it

My Father-in-law from above was hit by a semi-truck today coming home from work. He was knocked unconscious, taken to the local hospital, then life flighted to Sioux City for evaluation. No internal damage, so no surgery, only a concussion with a lot of scraps and bruises. At least he wont catch Covid in the hospital..........

Bump...

Have there been any recent studies re: regular smoking/tobacco use and severity of COVID symptoms?

I was diagnosed with COVID-19 Saturday afternoon and it's likely that I was exposed 8-10 days ago (based on diagnosis from a friend I was at a gathering with) but no way to know for sure...could be possible he got it from me as I had weird bouts of diarrhea at his crawfish boil but still felt fine and suspected my earlier lunch to be the culprit. I used to be a weekend social drinker and smoker, but during the shutdown must admit that I've started drinking about two stiff adult beverages an evening/night and anywhere from 2-4 cigarettes along with it. I am 39, physically fit and run quite a bit and used to hit the gym almost every evening before the shutdown. But I also smoke a little cannabis and a few cigs pretty much every night now

So far, if I hadn't received a positive result, I am not sure i'd even suspect I had it. I have had days with frequent bowel movements (4 times today already) and have had a crick in my neck that I suspect was from sleeping but possibly worsened by virus which has pretty much gone away after 2 days, and have had very mild allergy symptoms which are typical to me since I spend so much time outdoors and esp since it has been very dry in Houston lately. Mucous in nose/dry nose at times/dry throat and slight occasional drycough etc.

I am relieved so far that i have been almost "asymptomatic" (in that these symptoms are symptoms i seem to go through pretty regularly this time of yr being outdoors a lot and would never consider out of the ordinary)...but hoping it's not calm before the storm and that this will somehow just move to my lungs all of a sudden.

Anyways, sorry for the long post, just wondering if there have been any updated studies re: smoking and COVID symptoms?
