Not that I really trust what they say either way. I have seen reports of this in Europe and now approximately 100 kids in the US. If it is only EU and USA, why?

The media. Last I saw we are on pace that is about average of what we see per year.

We are way above the average rate of cases.

Now assuming that the ones caused by COVID resolve like previous ones then it's just something to keep an eye on.

In China they locked everyone in their houses. So they may have missed some post virus complications that came and went before they let people out...

It is extremely rare and statistically insignificant.

Completely ****ing irrelevant to the question asked. We all know your stance on this.

Even if it is a very rare occurrence, for people with kids it is still worth knowing more about simply to be able to spot signs if it happens to your kid.

Maybe Kiddoc can chime in.

I have a 4 month old son so I am keeping an eye on this. From what I read it looks like a post infection reaction to the illness. Can be triggered by a lot of things.

I think if caught early I don't think it is deadly, the issue is catching it early.

The good news is every pediatrician will now be looking for signs an symptoms so quality care should be fine.

I have kids. For me as a parent I need to know if something is common or even likely before I get to worked up about it.

When you look at the numbers for this condition, that we haven't even positively linked yet, it's so extremely rare that it isn't worth being remotely concerned about.

It's definitely with discussing out of curiosity, but not out of concern.

There are about 6,000 hospitalizations nationally in a typical year.

Quote:

In the year 2000, approximately 4248 hospitalizations with KD were reported among children under 18 in the US, of which 3277 (77%) were for children under 5 years of age. In 2009, the estimated number of hospitalizations with KD was 5447 (standard error [SE]=297), 4040 (SE=227) for children under 5 years of age.

In a city like NYC, which is about 3.6% of the US population, that means you would expect in the neighborhood of 15-20 hospitalizations in a given month.

Agreed and that's what this thread was, it hadn't devolved into a fear porn discussion yet

The affected kids are mostly testing negative for Covid serology.

So the uptick is Because of the stay at home order. We have ruined these kids immune system by not exposing them to enouh stuff.

Thanks for the info. That is a blessing that children continue to remain fairly unafflicted

I would like to see a source, most of what I've seen says they were either positive or had antibodies

Negative serologies don't make for good headlines.

Are you saying the media has a vested interested in increasing the panic?
