Mother of God has anyone else had the Nasal Swab?

I've broken my leg, broken my hand, and had my shoulder knocked out of socket at FDT practice, and the nasal swab was the worst pain of my life.

My mom has a few slight health risks, so I was tested just to reassure her that I'm not a risk to her when I go over to her house. I went this afternoon at Zube Park in Cypress, I've had a bit of a cold for a few days and my sinuses were sore anyway and it felt like an explosion went off in my nasal cavity and behind my eye when they did it.

They swirled the damn thing around 8" deep into my cavity for 15 seconds. I almost thought I was going to pass out.

Did anyone else have this bad of a reaction or was my
testing lady a little overzealous?

An old high school buddy of mine did his live on Facebook and it looked exactly how you are describing it. He's a big ole dude and he was gushing tears

Yup, it was a horrible experience. Hopefully, tandy miller and george1992 won't reply to you as they will call you every name in the book for being a *****. I had three tests, two down the throat and one jammed up my nose. By far, that swab up the nose was insane.

Your testing lady didn't know what she was doing. It's noxious to have a nasal swab, but not that noxious

The funny thing was that when I got tested, they just took a saliva sample. I was disappointed because I was curious what it felt like to do the full nasal swab.

I don't know why it's not all saliva tests at this point. They've been available for a while and work just as well. I guess it's a logistical bottleneck somewhere.

Maybe the swab is more accurate or cheaper?

Yeah, there's a huge difference between "uncomfortable" as I've heard it described and what I felt.

As of a couple weeks ago, there was only one approved supplier of the sample collection tubes for the saliva samples. They were cranking them out as fast as they could but they can't make enough for everyone.

Just getting all the reagents to make the things and keep running flat out is a logistical challenge. Same is true for everyone making COVID testing supplies as fast as they can. It is truly phenomenal the way Industry has stepped up to make these things and not just the companies making them but supply chain as well.

That's interesting because one of the positives that was noted in the early news reporting was that collection could be done in a wide rage of containers.

But reality usually sets in around the time you have to tell the FDA exactly how you are going to do something.

Hopefully they can get the kits ramped up, because the nasal probe sounds unpleasant...

Is it the same as the swab for the flu? I've had that and it was uncomfortable but not that bad.

I did have scabs ripped out of my nasal cavity after a deviated septum surgery and that was hell so I know the feeling when they get up into your sinuses.

Posted the following on another thread - TLDR swab was very uncomfortable when administered by what I assume was a well trained nurse/tech...

"I do not think a very high % of people can/will administer a self swab properly.

I have had 2 tests with the first administered by a tech at Memorial Hospital. They only did one nostril, but lets just say they did a very thorough job. They stuck that swab in further than I ever though something could go into your nose/sinuses. They swirled it around for 10-15 seconds. It made me gag and cough and my eyes were watering. Very unpleasant experience.

I had the second test done at the Harris County site in Katy which was self swab as described above. They give you the swab and a vial to put it in. The nurse then tries to explain/show you how to do it from 10 feet away, wearing a mask, while you have your window up and cant hear a word they are saying. I had just had a test done so I knew what it was supposed to feel like, and I had read enough to know how it is supposed to work/how deep to go etc. Even with that knowledge I am not sure I did it good enough. Shoving something that far in is kind of like trying to thump your own eyeball - your brain really doesn't want you to do it.

I find it hard to believe that someone that has no idea what it is supposed to feel like and has never before heard/read how it works, could do do it correctly. IF it is critical to swab as intensively as the hospital tech did in order to get accurate results - I would say a huge % of the self swab tests are inaccurate.

I say this with NO agenda - just relaying my experience."

Agree with you. It was extremely hard hearing the tech through my window, face shield, and mask. No untrained person would even think to go that far into their own nose, no way.

I haven't had it but my wife did, and she described it by saying she would rather repeat her epidural free childbirth experience than get that test again. So there's that...

I had similar test done for anthrax after the attack on Senate office buildings in 2001. Testing was done by staff from Bethesda Naval hospital and hit hurt like a M-F!! And they had to do BOTH nostrils, so the first time you weren't really expecting it but for the 2nd one your entire body jerks back trying to avoid it. I was right next to a male colleague when our test were done and he jumped up like a rabbit!

There have been several studies that show just a simple nasal swab will be sufficient to identify virus. You can now test for it in spit too. The CDC sample collections guidelines removed the preference for NP swabs back the end of April. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/lab/guidelines-clinical-specimens.html

I think there isn't so much concern that people are getting false negatives because they didn't stick it up their nose far enough, especially if you tell them to take an NP sample and they come up short and end up with a mid turbinate sample. Probably don't want to instruct an anterior nares sample and have the patient barely stick the swab in their nose.

Thanks a bunch for the response and explanation! It was really bugging me thinking it just further mucked up our testing.....
Why are they still using it then? I understand for self swab (hopefully they will get something resembling a good sample) but why are the Dr. and Hospitals still using it?

The CDC guidelines calls for a particular type of swab for the others. My guess is they have to use all available options to ensure enough sample collection devices.

I can jam a standard Q-tip in my nasal cavity so far that it basically disappears pointing basically horizontally into my head if I'm looking straight. It was my go-to parlor trick to freak people out. I presume the tests go in there with a longer swab and root around a while.
