If you've already had covid-19 and are still testing positive, if you get it again do you just go off of the symptoms?

My sense of smell is off the wall again today. I can smell a strong smell of what I take to be a pesticide, but nobody else can smell it at all.

On the other hand, if I go outside, it's back to normal.

It may be worth noting that I have had issues with phantom smells before -- the smell of wiring burning and the smell of wet burlap. This is neither of those two, but I guess it could be a new phantom smell.

How long has this been going on? As I've noted elsewhere, the virus is too new to know what "recovered" actually means. It seems quite common for people to have weird symptoms long after being "virus free."

Good news is, it seems normal sense of smell and taste do return.

A decent percentage of those who lost their sense of smell and taste due to COVID-19 still have that symptom. In general, when a virus destroys this sense, we say that it will take months to a year for a full recovery. When there is a complete loss of sense of smell, phantosmia can be a temporary or a permanent outcome as the body tries to heal itself. The prevalent thought is that the nerve endings are trying to regenerate, and sometimes they re-grow to an improper ending. Therefore, a smell which should trigger X ends up triggering Y. That, of course, is a gross oversimplification of the process. U.S. patients who suffered with the virus have only had, at most, a few months to recover. Time will tell. Hoping for the best for all those who have been affected.

This afternoon.

I don't think this is coronavirus again because:
1) the smell is in one location
2) it is only one smell, not a mish-mash of different smells at different times
3) in other locations, everything is normal.

When I had covid-19 a few weeks ago, the smell issues existed wherever I was and kept changing. It included smells that I have no words to describe.

I should be around day 8-10 after exposure/initial infection. Yesterday i had prob 60% smell and today it's almost dead. Scares me that it can take months to a year to get back, if ever, according to some studies. That would SUCK.

Is this typically an early symptom or later in the virus? I've heard of post viral anosmia which is what i hope this is. I've been largely asymptomatic (maybe some mild symptoms I'd never think twice about bc they happen from time to time) but feel like I should be nearing the end. I wanted to go run 4 miles tonight but wife talked me out of it. If I eat something, I can only tell if it's salty or sweet but not much else. Can faintly smell my deodorant.
