Funerals and Covid-19

Covid-19 really plays hell with funerals.

My oldest brother passed away Thursday afternoon (not from covid-19). The funeral (graveside only) is on Monday. I don't know if anyone is coming from more than 20 miles away. As far as I know, noone in the family who lives more than twenty miles from the church is coming.

Normally, after a funeral there is a meal at the church for everyone who wishes to stay. I don't think that we're doing that.

I was thinking we could possibly have a small family get together in Guymon, Ok, afterwards, but with something like one case for every twenty two or so residents in the county, that seems awfully iffy. Also, since my oldest brother's wife is in her late 70s, we really don't want to take a chance on exposing her to it anyway.

So it looks like we'll just get in our own cars and return home after the service.

Very sorry for your loss, and that your family can't be together to properly grieve and reminisce. I hope y'all find some comfort somehow.

Eric, I'm sorry for your loss and that the situation is compounding an already difficult time. I'll say a prayer this evening for your brother and your family.

Several years ago, one of my best friends lost his grandmother. Her last request was to not have too much of a funeral, but that everyone should have a party a month or two after the fact - and that there must be margaritas. Perhaps you can find a way to celebrate your brother's life in a fitting manner soon.

It's worth the risk IMO to just have it.

Terrible situation.

Here.

This sounds like one of those "do what you think is the right thing" moments, and maybe do your best to honor your brother's wishes as you think he'd want it in the process.

I'm sorry you lost your brother; I hope you guys were on good terms, my brother and I haven't spoken in three years and I wonder what it would be like if he passed before we spoke again.

In this case, my brother was in a coma for encephalitis caused by West Nile Virus a few years ago. He hasn't been very communicative since then except on rare occasion.

If not for the West Nile Virus, he'd probably be out getting the combine ready for wheat harvest.

How about a tailgate meal that the family brings to where ever your sis in law lives. A picnic.

So sorry for your loss, Eric.

I hope you are able to celebrate his life in a meaningful way now and maybe in a bigger way when things are more normal.

My friend's 13 yr old son was tragically killed by a falling tree limb about a month ago. The family, despite the restrictions, had a memorial service on their property (~ 30 acres). Approximately 400 people showed up. There were no law enforcement or county officials present.

Grandmother passed away last month. She was very active in the planning of the funeral. She was VERY adamant that all safety protocols be used.

We found out at the funeral that she paid for the church's technology upgrades to ensure decent online broadcasts. Ironically he funeral was the 3rd broadcast.

went to a funeral today in Katy. Must have been 200+ at the church. People were required to wear masks but that was about it.
