So one of my coworkers tested positive this week and wanted some help with how likely the rest of my family's exposure risk is at this moment.

His daughter works in hospice care and moved back in with them a few weeks ago. She gets tested every Friday. Last Friday was her first positive result but she has not displayed any symptoms besides a cough that lasted about a day, the Wednesday before the test was given. Her test results did not come back until Monday after he had already been at work. He has been out of the office since.

Now he has had a horrible cough as long as I've known him. We all try to isolate each other in our offices but some interaction is necessary and none of us were wearing masks because no one thought they had had any direct exposure. By the way, he did not inform any of us of his home situation so none of us knew there was a high risk healthcare worker living with him.

Right now I feel perfectly normal. Have always taken GNC's Mega Man Sport multivitamin that has plenty of Vitamin D, antioxidants, and other recommendations that Rev has given us. I am also O+ bloodtype. Have a video call into my Doc in a hour to set up a lab test. Regardless of the result I am starting my quarantine time from Monday but wanted to get some thoughts on the schedule of events.

When was my possible first exposure based on my coworker's exposure?
If my test comes back negative, is there any issue with my wife and daughter to go stay at her mom's while I finish my quarantine or are they still possibly already contagious?

Sounds like you are taking proper precautions and assuming you are positive. How long until the test comes back? If it's negative, listen to your body. Onset of symptoms can be as long as 2 weeks, but usually averages 5-7 IIRC.

From what i've read you should consider yourself high risk if you have spent time in an enclosed space with someone who has tested positive for 10-15 minutes. Do you think you have spent that amount of time with your co-worker? Any hour long meetings in a conference room? If it's just the occasional walking by his desk or handing him something in a bullpen or cubicle setting, you should be OK.

You should test positive long before the symptom window.

If your test is negative, it is unlikely your wife/daughter was exposed as a result of your coworker. The thing to watch out for is a false negative. A second negative test at least 24 hrs later and you should be good.

Thinking about timing...

Coworkers daughter tested negative on Friday, but had possible symptoms Wednesday (~5 days after negative result) and tested positive Friday. Timing suggests she was probably exposed around Friday of the last negative test. Too much before and she would have been positive a week earlier.

That does set coworker up to be infectious on or before Monday when he came into the office.

But as has been said... 10-15 minutes of contact on that Monday, or maybe even Friday.

Fridays test came back negative. My doctor lined me up another test on Monday to confirm. Trying hard not to go down the false negative rabbit hole.

Glad your first test came back neg. I have a buddy that is in charge of the CV protocols at a large corp. He said they have not had a single worker infected by a coworker and they have had over 30 infections. You would be considered a third party to the infection with the daughter being first party, father second party. They also have not had any third party infections. Unless the dad tests positive, and I don't think you have said he did, then you are very unlikely to be positive based on what you have shared.

My family is currently quarantining ourselves as well. Had a birthday party for my mother in law at my house last Wednesday night. Big reason for party is she has ALS and will not likely survive beyond this year. Only family and the two of the very closest of her friends and one of her nurses.

On Friday my nephew and his gf that were at the party tested positive. He's a TCU senior and had been to a party the prior weekend. His dad is hyper fearful of every potential virus spread (SARS, ebola, swine, avian, etc.) and generally demands his family be careful. Unfortunately he missed this error in action by his son and now we are all waiting out our quarantine. My wife, two daughters (one 6 months preg) and son-in-law are scheduled for tests on Tuesday (6 days in) and I am scheduled for Thursday. Test results will take 2-3 days because all rapid response tests in our area are booked through the end of next week.

Hopefully none of us were infected but the situation was idea for spread. A large group together, dining, laughing and hugging and two confirmed infected attendees. Four people over 70 with my m-i-l already having breathing issues due to the ALS. Oh, and I forgot to mention, a hired Elvis impersonator did a 15 minute show followed by photos. So far, so good and time will tell.

Second test yesterday came back negative as well. Have my antibody test scheduled for Friday to see if I'm asymptomatic or if I acquired my superpower earlier in the year and beat this thing outright.

Interesting. In a similar situation. A school closed down bc a kids A's parent(s) tested positive - didn't get news of it until Monday. School won't release info on who or if kid tested. kid B who attends that school was at a small (8kids and 8 adult) swim/bday get together the day before with me and my family (Sunday).

I'd consider worst case scenario my family and I are third or fourth order party.

However, this kid B comes down with fever tuesday morning. Great. Parents own urgent care so did a COVID-19 rapid test. Negative. So they took a second sample And sending for PCR and now awaiting results. I know the risk is low especially with a negative rapid test but also not super psyched about it.
Not necessarily about becoming ill myself but the second order consequences of having to close down the office or risk my parents and other contacts I come into risk contraction.
