CARROLLTON, Texas As North Texas watches COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations surge, one family is shouldering a health crisis that they never expected to face.

That crisis, all began on May 30 when just a single relative, unknowingly infected with COVID-19, interacted with seven family members at a surprise birthday party.

------------

Even though everyone did their best to stay socially distant, Barbosa said it wasn't enough.

"It wasn't that long. It was only a couple of hours," Barbosa, a volunteer EMT said. "But during that brief time, somehow the other 18 family members are now infected with COVID."

-------------
Barbosa said it's likely Carole infected Frank after she stopped by the party to drop something off.

Carole has been hospitalized since June 13, and Frank has been in a hospital since June 17.

Frank is in the ICU and is on life support. Barbosa told WFAA that he is inches away from being put on a ventilator.

"My dad's hanging on by a thread," Barbosa said. "They're saying this is one of the last straws for my dad."

If you are on "life support" you are on a vent. Someone doesn't understand what is going on with dad.

I love/hate articles like this

Article: they tried to social distance St the party

That article is full of stuff like that.

It was only a few hours.
Guidance that said the party should be harmless.
He had a cough but went golfing and hosted a party.

In the olden days (6 months ago) we would say "play stupid games, win stupid prizes "

Just an example of how we got to where we are in Texas this week.

I think it was graduation parties like this and of course the bars re-opening, not to mention the outdoor protests.

I would love to see a 9pm curfew on all bars starting now until hospitalizations start trending the right way again.

Every person in an ICU for coronavirus at every hospital likely has a contingent of family that is infected as well. Likely in similar numbers. Perhaps there are a few infected hermits but not many

This article tells me that if you are vulnerable you need to be careful. If you are in your 80s or recovering from cancer you should NOT be attending large social gatherings. The 3 people who were hospitalized were all vulnerable and should not have been at that party.

Yep.

The lady with cancer stayed out on the porch the entire time.

The older mother just stopped by to drop something off. Her husband never attended.

That would prompt me to wonder about other exposure vectors.

Or maybe there was some "come on inside for a minute", hugging, and other close contact during the drop off?

Anyone other than the guy with the cough just picking something up from her outside should not have infected her.

Didn't have time to read article. Ages of those hospitalized vs. those not? Sounds like some comorbidities?

Both hospitalized people in their 80s. 3rd person who got ill was recovering from cancer.

Another article showed some pictures and one of the older people in their 80s was overweight too. This may be like the cruise ship where we get an idea of the effects of people at different ages. If only the three oldest require hospitalization that is good news.

married for 68 years

so in their late 80s, amirite?

also supports the data that the attack rate AND mortality rate of the bug increases with age

this thing is a heat seeking missile for the olds

Sometimes people die from alcohol overdose .... car accidents .... all kinds of terrible things

Focus needs to continue to be on high risk people not putting themselves in situations where they add to their risk of getting covid

Personal responsibility is still #1...not "what is the government doing to keep us safe?!"

From a different article. For a minute I was questioning my sanity because it took me awhile to figure out where I got those details from.

Quote:

Kathy is recovering and feeling better, despite contracting the virus while simultaneously undergoing chemo treatments, said Barbosa. He says she went to the party and got infected, even though she socially distanced outside on a porch.
---------------
Barbosa's mother, Carole, had stopped by the party briefly to drop something off, he said. Days later, on June 6, Carole tested positive for coronavirus. She was hospitalized a week later and has since returned home, according to a Facebook page set up by the family.

Barbosa said his father, Frank, who did not attend the party, must have been infected with the virus through Carole.

Frank had been admitted to the hospital June 17 and was placed in the intensive care unit soon after.

and if they're like my 80 year old father they say 'when it's my time it's my time'

He was still going to the gym as of last week but this latest outbreak has had him put that on hold for a bit.

Massachusetts released their mortality data by age a few weeks ago and it showed that they had more deaths from Covid-19 over 84 than under 80. Insane.

When it says she stopped by the party briefly, it would be nice to know more details. Was she there for 15 minutes, gave everyone a hug and high five before leaving or did she run inside with an N95 mask and gloves and drop the package just inside the door? For all we know she gave her son a kiss on the cheek when she walked in and shook the hands of all the attendees.

A friend of mine knows this family and evidently they are very upset about this story. Only 8 people got it(not 18), the grandfather isn't on life support and it didn't start at the party.

The problem is that its not all about him (as my mother reminds him). Olds spread it around when they're out there rolling the dice on their own health.

Flagged for obvious racism. Covid does not transmit at protests.

No, you don't need to be on a vent. Could be on CPAP/BiPAP (which is like a vent-lite), could also have high flow nasal canula, a non-rebreather, or other oxygen delivery device other than a true ventilator. Additionally could be receiving drugs like epinephrine, norepinephrine, etc to help support his blood pressure and heart function enough to keep him alive.

I agree that high risk individuals need to do a better job of protecting themselves, but we have to keep in mind that there is both mortality and morbidity associated with this illness. Protecting the elderly from infection will help with mortality rates, but even young and healthy people are seeing what will likely be long term problems develop. Lung scarring, consequences of small blood clots hitting organs and extremities.

Everyone needs to do what they can to avoid this and spreading it to others, even the young and healthy.
