COVID-19's indirect positive effect on me

After the outbreak, I began to wear my mask whenever I go outside, sanitize my hands after leaving a commercial area, and wash my hands for 30 seconds every time I return home. I also try not to touch my face as much as possible these days.

Life does suck more than before because of this virus, but I have to admit that following these guidelines have not only prevented me from catching COVID, but it is also preventing me from catching a cold. I always got a cold once every month or two, but I'm happy to say that I have not gotten sick at all for 3 months now.

I'll admit, I only started washing my hands for 30 seconds and sanitizing my hands frequently after the COVID outbreak. But, even after the virus is dealt with, I'm definitely gonna continue doing this until the day I die.

The best thing about this for me is it has made me completely re-evaluate priorities in life.

Not sure why so many seem to complain about spending so much time at home with family because I have loved it. The television comes on about 1/10th as often as it did. We are canceling our DirecTV and going with YouTubeTV, saving over $100/month. We've gone on evening walks as a family, spent more time in the backyard, etc and it's been great. I haven't watched a bit of news in 3 months and don't miss it.

And the way things seem to currently be going, it looks like my Saturdays are going to suddenly free up as well, like my Sundays already had.

I haven't really found many things that I truly miss yet.

My daughter turned three yesterday and coming home every evening instead of heading to the gym after work has been a tremendous silver lining in all this. Doesn't hurt that my weights came in and she can play in the driveway while I workout in the garage.

Completely agree. Much more time with the kids (16,19). More cooking together. More board games and walks. People keep saying things like "wasting your life" or "living in fear". Been the complete opposite for me. Made it better in many respects.

I've been working at home with my 4 year old and 2 year old. The first couple of weeks, I didn't know if I could handle it long-term. However, we've gotten used to it and almost 4 months in, I am doing very well at work, have a good system figured out with the kids, and I feel very lucky that my covid situation is pretty good. We go for walks every day, I make lunch at home instead of going out every day, so I'm losing weight and saving money. But, the TV situation has been the opposite for me vs OP. While I'm working, the TV and iPad have been very helpful, but I feel guilty letting the kids just sit there all day. Trying to come up with good activities and things for them to do that are more stimulating.

I am in the same boat with a seven-year-old, he spending a ridiculous amount of time in front of some sort of screen every day.

I was fortunate to have a minimal impact on my job. Since I work shift work I get lots of days off, and since no one dares to take vacation or call in sick I've been off 14 days out of every month. As a family we've done more sit down meals, all helped weed and redo flower bed, lots of walks, fishing at a small pond, family movie nights. It's been really nice. I'm looking forward to continuing this aspect once things go back to normal

My daughter was born in December. My maternity leave ended the week work from home started so I never went back to the office. She will be at least 8 months old before that happens. It has been absolutely wonderful spending so much time with her.

More home cooked meals (well ate at home more), realized I don't need to go to the office to be productive, called and talked to my parents and brothers more, have been able to work on my house more and check off a lot of boxes on my honeydo list... and most importantly lowered by golf handicap by 5 strokes

Good news: Haven't had to see my favorite dry cleaner since early March, saved hundreds over months.
Bad news: Wonder if my favorite dry cleaner will be open when I decide to go back?

Biggest issue in all of this for us weight lifters has been closed gyms. Runs/walks just do not cut it for us as we need the higher level of stimulation for the muscles free weights give vs running which only makes one weaker over time or body weight work which doesn't do much to strengthen the body if one is already lifting relatively heavy on a regular basis. As one who sees weights and over all strength training as the superior method of training for overall health, I feel for those not able to hit the gym where gyms are closed and most places are still sold out of standard free weights for garages. Ironically, strength training with a proper diet and enough sleep is probably the best recipe for building your immune system and being best prepared in the event one gets Covid.
Outside of that, I really hope a lot more companies stay with a work from home model. I HATE daily commutes to the office and love how you are already home once work ends. Plus you can many times get your work over with by 3 or 4 and call it a day, depending on your workload and company/boss if you aren't already the boss. We are Aggies after all. What do you call an Aggie after they graduate? Boss.

I put together my own gym a few years ago since I was tired of waiting on machines and it has saved a ton of money in the long run. I typically work from home most of the week so not much difference to me.

Speaking with a few corporate real estate people they said the market it spiking right now but that industry will tank in a year or two. As others mentioned companies are finally seeing that everyone does not need to come into the office every day if at all. I know of a few 500+ companies that have only had their IT department coming into the office to keep things running which is fewer than 10%. The days of huge centers and buying/renting skyscraper floors may be done for most industries.
