When to Self Isolate

I am experiencing one symptom: a dry, sometimes intense cough since Friday. Typically, I cough during the night, but have been coughing more during the day. I spoke to my PCP, and he said to take NyQuil, and if my cough persists, I should be tested. I decided to get tested immediately, but all the testing centers told me it would be 7 - 10 days before results. I could not get an appointment for a scarce rapid test. I do not know where I would have been infected.

So, should I self-isolate just in case I am infected? I have a wife and two kids (4 year-old and 1 year-old)., and they have no symptoms. Should I mask at home? Should we all stay at home until the CDC guidelines for self-isolation has passed? Obviously, I would not consider these measures if it was a normal situation.

We have been invited to a gender reveal party Saturday. Out of an abundance of caution, we will not attend. I'm curious about what you would do? Also, what are your policies at work when revealing any symptom of Covid even if you are experiencing just one.

If I felt I was sick enough to get tested, I would isolate particularly from anyone that is high risk or regularly engaged with anyone that is high risk.

What in the world is that couple thinking? She's pregnant and they're holding a party.

As for your family and work, come on - you know the answer.

Actually, I don't know the answer. That's why I posted the question.

Really hard decision to make and I hope you don't have it, and If you do, I wish you a speedy recovery.

The downside to going out, potentially getting someone sick, and then that person going to the hospital or dying would mess me up the rest of my life so if I am not feeling well or think I have been exposed I self quarantine.

Each person has to make their own choice though in this absurd time we are living through.

You've already been around the wife and kids contagious if you do have it.

No one goes to the party. No one goes to work. I would suggest getting groceries delivered for a week or two.

I think you know right the right thing to do. It also involves your family since they have been around you. I would isolate within the house and wear a mask when mixing with them if it can't be avoided. Better safe then sorry. My daughter isolated for 10 days waiting on test results in Dallas last month. They were negative.

Thanks for the thoughtful answer. That is what I have been doing. I have masked at home and haven't left the house since the onset of my cough. Haven't coughed today, but I will wait it out until after 10 days since onset. My family has no symptoms, yet. I have presented no other symptoms.

I truly wanted to know what people are doing when experiencing one Covid symptom and what their places of business are doing. If you wake up with a headache, are you self-isolating for 10 days or more?

On campus, typically if you have a fever, you should stay home. Normally, the rule of thumb is 24 hours fever free. With this virus, obviously this is different. Our district has stated that an employee that has any Covid-19 symptom is to report symptom to HR Asst. Supt and go home. An employee must meet three conditions to return which includes 10 days have passed since onset.

I hope we have signed up a ton of subs because this fall when school does open, teachers are going to be out substantially.

I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

It works for telephone marketers, too.

When I had covid, we shut our office down and I stayed at work while everyone else stayed home.

One afternoon I was at my desk and the phone rang. After I answered it, the conversation went like this:

Caller: How are you doing today?
Me: I have the coronavirus.
Caller: That's good.
Me: It is?
Caller: I'll add you to the do not call list. Good bye.

Update: I'm cough free but still isolating until Tuesday. Family is symptom free. . . But gender reveal party is now on Zoom. Won't be able to get out of it.

FYI even though TexMed doesn't seem to have appointments available with their online system (says full or other message), at least as of 2 weeks ago they took a walk-in for a rapid test with 1 symptom - beginnings of sore throat.

Their rapid test is nasal but not the brain tickler. 15 min result.

Where do you live? I'm in the Panhandle and we easily found a 15 minute result test that a family member needed today.

I'm sure little Lakyn will be just fine if you don't attend their gender reveal. I've opted out of all festivities for the time being.

Austin has been slammed with tests. Total Men's could rapid test me IF I had no symptoms. Other places had tests that would require 7 - 10 day turn-around. One emergency room box wanted to charge for the test and the $300 it would cost for emergency room visit by my insurance. TexMedClinic has rapid tests, but they wouldn't see me with just one symptom,

I am going through this right now. My employers decided to rent out a small section of the office to this good old boy real estate dude who has been living the high life by his own admission all through the outbreak . . . .eating out . . live music at his favorite bar. He decided to have elective surgery and his pre-procedure COVID test comes back positive last Friday.

I have had a combined total of 20 second of interaction with the guy in the few days I have been in the office and it was from 10 plus feet away each time. Still, I went in and got the test this morning. I had a temp of 99.2 which has since been normal all day and I have zero symptoms of anything. The rapid test came back negative. I am working and sleeping in the spare room until the big boy test comes in.

This is great though . . . my employer gets the office professionally cleaned and disinfected over the weekend and this moron's wife comes in to collect some of his stuff and she tries to strike up a conversation with a few folks there at the time. They basically ran the other way and told the woman to leave. My employers call the same company up again and they did the job over again last night. I am guessing they are now taking a loss on the sublease.
