We've had a breakout among middle school and high school age kids in our area because they all went to the same church camp last week. I know of 3 cases where the parent took their camp kid to urgent care, had them signed in for test, waited for hours and decided to just leave. All 3 received notice from the clinic that they were positive. None of the 3 ever took the test. How does this happen?

Is this 100% true? I've read a lot of similar situations. If it is, why don't they go to their local new channel?
These stories are running rampant on facebook. They're either true or massive urban legends.
A friend told me a similar story - he and his roommate went to get tested, filled out paperwork, then decided to hell with it and left, then got notified that he was positive. So identical details.
So it's either an urban/social media legend (99% probability) or a real problem at the labs.

Guess everyone caught on to the other copy/paste. Now it's a church camp instead of "a friend".
Look out for numerous "church camps" having the exact same situation from numerous cities across the land.

Let us know if you get an EOB for the test if it hits your insurance. Also, do you know which lab supposedly ran the test? Lawyers who handle qui tam cases are going to sue the labs if they are fraudulently billing tests that never happened if any of it hits government payors. This happens quite a bit because of the millions these labs make, which has only been multiplied with the COVID tests.
I heard this story almost word-for-word from my S-I-L, so it's clearly nonsense.

I heard this exact same type of story with slightly different details. Customer of mine said some family friends of theirs (husband and wife) went and filled out the paperwork and waited to be called back. After waiting a long time they told the clinic that they really just came to be tested because they were recently around a lot of people and they were just curious to get tested. They decided to leave and try again another time. Rest of the story was the same as OP. This was conveyed to me verbally, but I guess my customer or his wife could have gotten it from FB and lied about it being a family friend.... idk
Yeah the word-for-word details are classic for these fake stories. I'm calling my shot on "things that didn't happen".
This sounds a lot like the facebook posts my wife reads me about Abbott shutting down the State.

Everyday for the last week or so we've heard rumor from a guy that Abbott is looking to shut down the state starting tomorrow.
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw someone test positive at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

The best part of this one that nobody seems to have caught on yet is the "Breakout among middle school kids" part.
Wait wait.... but it's settled science that kids just don't get this and spread it around! Same people who will likely spread this rumor all over the place are also probably throwing amazing hissy fits about opening schools because "kids don't spread this thing!"

I've seen at least three slight variations of this story on SM in the last week. And moreover anyone who understands anything about urgent care facilities knows how laughable this concept is.

And on a serious note.... THIS right here, from both sides, is why we can't have a real conversation about this virus and attack it in a unified manner, because we have this level of stuff being spread all over the internets by both extremes.
And since the majority of this country believes everything they read on the interwebs, we are stuck in some pretty dumb fights instead of working for a common cause.

Trouble is when you have real documented issues like San Antonio reporting thousands of cases as confirmed positives that weren't, or Florida testing centers reporting 100% positivity rates (when the truth is closer to 10%) people will believe this garbage because it doesn't seem that far-fetched. Not defending people spreading Facebook rumors, but the first time I heard it it didn't set off any bullsh*t alarms. It wasn't until the same exact story was being repeated that it was obviously false, not not because the idea of inflated test numbers was unbelievable.
