Pediatricians: What symptoms are ruling out Covid?

For the doctors out there, are there any symptoms kids are showing that help you immediately rule out Covid, if that is even possible? 3YO temperature hit 103.4 about an hour ago, after bouncing between 101 and 98.5 all morning, before the Tylenol brought it back down below 100. No other symptoms that she is showing or voicing to us. The only other time her fever has ever gotten this high was when she had a UTI. Our ped is only doing televisits for sick kids so we were not able to get her tested for any other illness or infection but he said that all Covid kids he has seen up to this point have either been asymptomatic or very mild, definitely not a 103+ fever. He did say we need to go ahead and assume she has it, even though there has been no known exposure, and wait until she is symptom free for a few days before she can go back over to Grandmas. Does this diagnosis sound about right and what are your thoughts about her returning to Grandmas once symptom free for 3 days? Should we wait longer? Have a rapid test scheduled for Monday. If that comes back negative, would that change my timeline at all?

Do you have access to a place that does rapid test? My 5 year old woke up sick two days ago, took him to pediatric urgent care nearby. Positive for strep, negative for Covid. Antibiotics and he's swimming in the pool right now. Limited my Covid saga to just a few hours.

In East Dallas. All the rapid testing sights I could find were booked up through Monday, with a lot of them closed on the weekends anyways. We have a rapid test scheduled for Monday afternoon in case her symptoms worsen.

Do you not have an urgent care location nearby to rule out another UTI?

Agree with the poster above. She needs to have a UTI ruled out & with kids ear infections can be sneaky initially. Once those two things have been excluded then maybe onto Covid.

Your pediatrician should remember that the most common thing to cause a fever in this age group is NOT Covid. Someone needs to look in her throat, ears, and check a urinalysis. Takes 5 minutes.

Yeah that is the frustrating part. Our pediatrician told us they are not seeing sick patients due to how the office is setup so they are only allowing wellness checks it the office and all sick patients are getting televisits. Basically they are doing the approach that if its viral the fever should be gone in a few days at most but if it last longer it must be bacterial and then they will proscribe antibiotics.

She woke up in a good mood today even though the temp was still 101.5. Another dose of motrin at 730 this morning and it has been 98 ever since. Having some digestive issues now. Symptoms have been around long enough now that I am hoping our rapid test tomorrow tells us something definitive. Me and the Mrs are symptom free (besides my anxiety flaring up) and quarantining as if we have it.

If it is covid, we have exposure narrowed down to a few things. 1. I am asymptomatic and picked it up at either work or obe of the many errands that need to be run since we have limited it to one parent taking all the trips 2. Instead of daycare, all the grandkids spend the days with grandma. Would be another asymptomatic pickup since, as of today, no one has reported symptoms. 3. Went to Fossil Ridge last weekend and made a trip into the gift shop. Every adult had a mask on but there were some kids that didn't. She had hers on. 4. We finally gave in a few days ago and let her play with the neighbor kids outside. Was only with them for 20-30 minutes but it was very up close interactions.

All these options should lead me to believe its some type of stomach bug but this thing presents with so many different symptoms who knows.

Just a mama/grandma here...I'd take her somewhere today or tomorrow for sure to have ears & throat looked at. Only time mine ever had over 101 was strep! Can't believe a pedi office is willing to let something fester and grow (ear or strep) for days to see if it goes away before prescribing antibiotics. Good luck, keep us posted!

Edit to say I also never over used antibiotics nor requested them but also don't like to see kids suffer longer than necessary! Have two nieces asymptomatic currently with covid ages 7 & 10, parents would have thought it was allergies - all they're showing is a little congestion. Got them tested due to grandparents and great grands- all four -have Covid! Classic everyone thought they had been "safe" and got together over fathers day weekend.
