Some expressed concern last week as HHS took this functionality over from CDC in order to increase efficiency and offer something much closer to a real-time views of hospital utilization.

For a government product, it's pretty good. Decent visualization and lots of downloadable data sets.

That's being nice. More than a few folks were decrying it as a Trump move to hide the severity of the pandemic.

From my vantage point EVERYTHING is reported based on medicare and medicaid billing. They cant distinguish between MANY little thing such as Flu and Pneumonia, age, etc.

EVERYTHING is built around obamacare guidelines, and then can't adapt. A person at a desk gives an ICD10 code and pushes the paper to the next person for reimbursement from the government. Literally everything is built on that transaction...how many nurses, etc. Want a different result?!?!? Well let's check Obamacare guidelines to see if we can make that happen......hell now the incentive IS for people to have Covid so they can get more funding.

I'm not sure a shiny website addresses the concerns that the data won't all be presented in the most straightforward way.

QALY (quality life-adjusted years) figures would be helpful for the ethicists and technocrats among us but would undoubtedly confuse the overall message of slowing the spread.

Slightly off topic: Do other countries have the same fear of death and disease that we do in the US? Asian and ME countries face viruses like COVID every few years it seems. The US is mostly healthy and isolated from such concerns. I recall reading that US suffers from more thanataphobia (fear of death) than many other countries, possibly because of a higher levels of anxiety in the culture, more prominence of powerful in the US (women have a greater fear of death versus men) and that the US is somewhat middling-religious (generally the most devoutly religious and the atheists have less fear of death).

One Karen I know on Facebook even went as far as to call it Fascism. Bit of a reach I thought. We'll see if she apologizes.

Wow the new website provides a ton of information and easy to break everything down. I assume they have been working on it for a while since it seems like a lot of information and formatting to do in a week.

Can you point to any ways this website or its data is deficient in comparison to its predecessor at the CDC?

Wouldn't that be a pretty damn simple master spreadsheet? Or Access file?

My understanding is that the CDC was slow getting the data into their systems. They were using a manual entry process that introduced delays of a week or more.

So the issue was moreso with data acquisition than presentation.
