Does the type of zinc matter? The different kinds vary by price and availability. Does it matter enough to hunt out a certain kind? Are any types a complete waste of money?
The Drs here have recommended 50mg, is that 50mg of a specific type that needs to be accounted for based on type or just 50mg of any type?

There have been 2 (I believe) actual studies on zinc and it's ability to reduce symptoms of the common cold. And it did matter a lot what form it was.

Take zinc w quercetin/broumelain. Quercetin is a zinc ionophore and works on the virus much like HCQ does, but at approx 35% efficacy. It is also OTC.

If I recall correctly, the body can only absorb so much zinc. So if you get 50 mg, split up the dose into two or three equal parts per day.

And one doctor recommended to take some on an empty stomach before bedtime.

My multi-vitamin has 45% DV of zinc, so I take the MV in the morning and 25 mg or so at night. Taking 50 mg upsets my stomach.

I saw one of those studies. As I remember zinc gluconate was at the top and one other form was not far behind.

I just get zinc gluconate because that is what worked in the case of the girl in Austin who had leukemia that led her doctor to investigate the use of zinc against the cold.

Zinc picolinate, another chelated form of zinc salt, is combined with picolinic acid from the amino acid tryptophan. Zinc picolinate is a popular supplement and is shown to be effectively absorbed in oral form for the treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency.

Inorganic Zinc Supplements

Inorganic zinc is not as effective or useable by your body as chelated zinc sources. Some forms of inorganic zinc are:

Zinc sulfate, a water-soluble, inorganic form of zinc or zinc salt. Sulfate conflicts with calcium and may cause stomach irritation. Sulfate is used in some eye drop solutions to treat eye irritation. Zinc sulfate taken orally or by injection may help heal skin lesions.

Zinc oxide, given as an oral supplement, has been found to have a significantly lower level of bioavailability than zinc citrate and zinc gluconate in a 2014 study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Zinc oxide is often used as a topical agent, such as in sunscreen or for treatment of skin disorders, including dermatitis, eczema, diaper rash and psoriasis.
