Just watched a news report regarding the second article below and it was moving.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. A man in his 50s who fought through and survived COVID-19 then required a double-lung transplant at UF Health Shands Hospital to fully recover.

When he arrived to Florida, he was fully dependent on life support, doctors say. What came next was historic for any hospital in the Southeast.

Doctors performed a double-lung transplant, becoming the first hospital in the Southeastern United States to perform the operation, doctors say.

and

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A young paralegal in Chicago and a car mechanic from Lake Zurich shared their stories after undergoing double lung transplants after suffering from COVID-19.

Both patients said the doctors here saved their lives. When they contracted COVID19 they both suffered severe lung failure, and now are breathing on their own.

Mayra Ramirez, 28, and 62-year-old Brian Kuhns, 62, now finally look and feel healthy.

These two are the first known patients in the U.S. who survived COVID19 because of double-lung transplants. Both spent weeks in the ICU on ventilators, and life support machines.

Ramirez, who suffered from an autoimmune disease, started feeling symptoms in April, she went into the emergency room on April 26 and says from then on, everything was a blur.

She spent six weeks on a ventilator. Her lungs showed irreversible damage. She had a transplant on June 5, and is now breathing on her own.

"I definitely have a purpose and if that purpose is just simply telling my story to raise awareness for people to stay safe and take this condition."

Repeat the data:

2009 H1N1 flu pandemic is estimated to have actually caused about 284,000 deaths world-wide (18,000 confirmed) over 19 mos.

COVID-19: 5 mos. 680,000 confirmed deaths. Estimated ?

Well. Never seen it in my career from H1N1. Much more common with COVID-19.

On average how long is a double lung transplant good for? That 28 year old will probably need at least 1 more down the line?

There is always a risk for rejection, but the bigger problem will be the anti-rejection meds that person will need for the rest of their life, which essentially leave you immunocompromised.

Am I reading this right that lung transplants are only good for maybe 10 years?

Quote:

Although some people have lived 10 years or more after a lung transplant, only about half the people who undergo the procedure are still alive after five years.

But people only believe the date they WANT to believe.

I've never seen one

Lung transplants in general are the most complicated transplant in terms of complications. They have very high rates of infection, and the one and 5 year mortalities are dramatically higher than the other solid organ transplants. Last I remember one year survival for lung was around 85% I think, compared to kidney which is 99% I believe.

Can we all agree that COVID is more dangerous than a severe flu season for the vulnerable and a lot less impactful for the healthy (younger with good immune systems)?

No.

My sister and brother in law are both abed with confirmed COVID. My BIL is on day 11 of a 102 degree fever.

Are they going to die? No. But they are active, fit, otherwise healthy early 40s adults, and COVID is absolutely kicking the **** out of them.

Nobody is knocked down for weeks by the flu.

Except those that died from the flu. Just saying...

Also, your response doesn't make the quoted statement false. Covid, statistically, is a lot less impactful on the healthy than Covid is on the vulnerable.

I do pray for a complete recovery for your sister and BiL.

And yet we have had 3.8M+ Americans recover from a positive COVID test. And with the antigen tests the 4.8M Americans who have test positive for COVID (I'm one), the likely # of Americans affected is 5X to 7X that number, so upwards of $27M+ recovered or were asymptomatic.

My anecdotal evidence is my 18 year old nephew (with severe asthma), BIL and SIL, and 12 of my nephew's 18-20 year old friends. The young adults test positive and were either asymptomatic or ~24 hours of a mild cold. My mid 40's BIL and BIL had mild cold symptoms for a week and I had it them for about 2 weeks (substantially less hard hitting than the flu).

I've had 4-5 others at Church and work get it and they all had the same symptoms as the other family members above.

I am sorry your BIL and SIL are struggling with it and hope they feel better soon.

Gig'Em and God Bless,
