If you have a relative in a rest home...

Please contact the rest home and the state for them to move forward with a sense of urgency on allowing out of doors, socially distanced, in person visitation. I've heard the state is accepting applications from rest homes to eventually do this, but it wasn't fast enough for my family.

My mother-in-law had to go to a nursing facility a couple of years ago because of her needing 24 hour care. She liked it fine until March when she could no longer have visitors and then she likened it to being in prison as she couldn't even leave her room. We could only see her through her window.

Friday evening, we got a call that they found her unresponsive and had taken her to the hospital. By the time we got there, the doctor said there wasn't anything he could do. After he declared her deceased, we were allowed to see her. I guess as long as she was alive, we could have given her the virus. It was a very sad situation that didn't need to have happened. Out of doors visitation poses virtually no risk of infection and it would have made her last months so much happier. Please don't think that you necessarily have plenty of time for the state to move at its usual snail's pace because no one can know how much time they have.

Sorry to hear.

As I've said before, the full impact of this virus goes beyond just the death rate. For some it may be permanent lung dysfunction or other long term morbidity, for others it may mean balancing the desire to see high risk family with the desire to keep them safe.

I hope we can figure out a way to minimize instances like this for everyone.

I am sorry for your loss. What a terrible way to lose a parent, not able to be with them.

Praying for y'all.

I had a friend tell me that they had to get the state involved to have their relative's LTC facility allow window visits.

Yes, you got that right. The facility shut down the practice of relatives going outside the exterior of the facility to see their loved one thru the window while talking on the phone. Thankfully they complained to whatever state dept has jurisdiction and got that rectified.

It's tragic. So many people near the end of their lives, many with diminished capacity, and they can't see their loved ones. And the loved ones are robbed of those moments as well.
