They reportedly have a case of a confirmed reinfection of someone who had previously had covid-19.

From https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/08/24/asia-pacific/science-health-asia-pacific/hong-kong-first-coronavirus-reinfection/:
Quote:

A man was infected with the coronavirus after recovering from an initial bout in April in what scientists said was the first case showing that reinfection may occur within a few months.

The 33-year-old's second SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected via airport screening on his return to Hong Kong from Europe this month. Researchers at the University of Hong Kong used genomic sequence analysis to prove that he had been infected by two different strains. The information technology worker didn't develop any symptoms from his second infection, which might indicate any "subsequent infections may be milder," the researchers said.

I'm guessing across the globe there will be some anecdotal things. Each human body is different and any individual might not fight it off.

But in general, it seems like it's very unlikely and even less likely to be anything severe the second time around. More data seems to suggest good news on this front than bad.

So that would currently be 1 out of 23,684,156 world wide identified cases. Pretty rare I would say.

Is it really that uncommon, though? I know there have been some cold/flu seasons where relatives of mine seem to get a 2nd or 3rd infection. I realize there are multiple strains every season, but I don't think it's unheard of for a person to not really lick it the first time.

How has the human race has made it this far given that we didn't evolve face masks and no adaptive immune response system?

(of an account) not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research.

Dude got both strains? Seems more unlucky than worrisome

Oh ok. Facts. Like 23 million infections without verified reoccurrence

This one occurrence is a fact. But many others like the post below me are anecdotal. That's what I was referring to

I tested positive for covid 2.5 months ago and have gotten covid symptoms two more times since then. 3 total times in 2.5 months. Every 2-3 weeks the symptoms come back. I have no idea if I'm getting reinfected or if the symptoms are just lingering.

My guess (key word) is lingering. Even docs on this board sat that any viral infection can cause months of lingering symptoms

Worker didn't develop symptoms. Not sure why this is even a story.

All it takes is one verified reinfection to show that reinfection can occur. This one provides that evidence.

Does a lingering viral infection show up as different strains?

If I get COVID but never develop symptoms do I care? No, I do not.

That makes me wonder why you are even reading this thread, then.

The title is "covid reinfection". If it was "man confirmed reinfected but asymptomatic" I may not have clicked.

If those who are reinfected tend to have much less severe symptoms, then don't you think that is a good thing to know?

Hopefully that will be the case. The fact that this is the first confirmed reinfection after more than six months and millions of infections is already saying something
