What viruses will the 2020-2021 flu vaccines protect against?
There are many different flu viruses and they are constantly changing. The composition of U.S. flu vaccines is reviewed annually and updated as needed to match circulating flu viruses. Flu vaccines protect against the three or four viruses (depending on the vaccine) that research suggests will be most common.
For 2020-2021, trivalent (three-component) egg-based vaccines are recommended to contain:
  • A/Guangdong-Maonan/SWL1536/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus (updated)
  • A/Hong Kong/2671/2019 (H3N2)-like virus (updated)
  • B/Washington/02/2019 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus (updated)
Quadrivalent (four-component) egg-based vaccines, which protect against a second lineage of B viruses, are recommended to contain:
  • the three recommended viruses above, plus B/****et/3073/2013-like (Yamagata lineage) virus.
For 2020-2021, cell- or recombinant-based vaccines are recommended to contain:
  • A/Hawaii/70/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus (updated)
  • A/Hong Kong/45/2019 (H3N2)-like virus (updated)
  • B/Washington/02/2019 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus (updated)
  • B/****et/3073/2013-like (Yamagata lineage) virus

One interesting development this year with flu vaccines is this year's vaccine marketed to the ONLY over 65 age will now be quadrivalent and include ALL 4 strains, unlike previous years when the "over 65 vaccine" only protected against 3 strains.

The flu vaccine is adjusted annually every year and I think the decisions are made in around Jan-Feb as to what strains to target/include.

Including 4 now for the elderly is news to me and I'd be curious how/why they'd get a different vaccine at some locations vs. the rest of the population. That seems unlikely but again I'd be curious to learn more if true. All US vaccines in the past have always included the same strains.

So you try this joke on the politics board and nobody thinks it is funny. You then post the same joke on this board, and when you get the same reaction, you blame it on this board being "doom and gloom?" Maybe you just aren't as funny as you think you are. And yes, I appreciate sophomoric humor.

The quadrivalent vaccine is relatively new but been around for a few years. I think the trivalent vaccine is still more common. Thus, they pick the top 3 (it is actually the top 2 type A and 1 type B) for the trivalent. The quadrivalent is those 3 plus one. The difference is simply that the quad can include 1 more target.

Also, old people get a high dose vaccine with a lot more antigen. Studies have shown that old people need higher doses to get the same protection as younger people.
