Question regarding antibody testing

So my daughter (17 year old) gave blood through a blood drive at school. They tested her antibodies and found she was positive for Covid antibodies.

We are all pretty sure that she, along with my wife and I, had Covid back in late February/early March. We travelled to Europe in February and were all very sick back then. We have been really isolated from the virus since then, if she had it after March then she was asymptomatic, as she has not had Covid symptoms since then.

My question is this, are the antibody tests picking up antibodies in systems from that long ago (8-9 months)? I think my wife and I are going to give blood as well so we will know if we have antibodies as well. Just curious what they are seeing with the antibody tests as far as longevity. Thanks.

Well. This thread is basically my bat signal....

Easiest answer is yes, we are still detecting anti bodies in donors from infections early on.

Most blood centers are doing at least 1 qualitative test for antibodies, and are migrating to doing 2 tests by adding a quantitative (titer) test by 12/1 due to fda requirements for convalescent plasma.

I was sick in late July and tested positive on the qualitative test last week and had a titer of 2.44 which is low but still significant nearly 5 months lost infection

I know of another donor who still test positive since he was sick in March, but I'm not privy to his titer level..

Go give blood and find out if you are positive. Worst case you save 3 lives, best case you are positive and can now donate convalescent plasma.

Thanks, wish her report would have given values, was just "positive."

I do appreciate the information.

We are in discussions to decide if we can/should report the titer test results.

Our docs are always very conservative when it comes to new tests and the reporting of results. Main reason is they want more data that the test is meeting the reliability standards before putting our name behind the final results. Second reason is that they don't want the public to make inferences or use the tests in any diagnostic form from the results (long term immunity, etc) until there is more data/information from the medical community.

Happy to help anytime with questions

ETA: forgot to mention. You can actually self schedule and donate convalescent plasma and still find out if you are positive for antibodies as we test every donation.

If you are in the dfw area: just follow this link to book an appointment

Hey there. How quickly do you have the antibody test results?

I think I may have had it a few weeks ago. I know I was exposed to it last week and tested negative today. I'm wondering if I might be positive for the antibodies.

Typical turn around time is 3 -5 days after donation.

Results are posted in the donor portal online.
