This is a great explanation and really makes it clear to the less medical science literate like myself.

Why then is the vaccine only guaranteed for 2 months? Does our immune system forget or does the critical protein mutate?

It was another example of why it is important for scientist and engineers to take English classes.

The NC DHS secretary said that they could guarantee that immunity would last at least 2 months.

This got picked up and repeated as "you are guaranteed 2 months of immunity." Which got shortened to "2 months of immunity".

The thing is that the study only monitored patients for 2 months. Basic understanding of immunology and physiology would suggest that antibodies will persist past 2 months (well past), however they cannot guarantee how long. Hence why someone said 2 months is all that's guaranteed.

And of course, conspiracy theorists and the media trying freak people out decided to seize that and amplify it to prove their point that the vaccine is just a money making thing, or that we're going to need to continue sheltering, etc.

would a vaccine immunity last longer than immunity via a mild infection?

family member diagnosed a reinfection two weeks ago, first case in NYC second in Harris County. probably 8.5 months between cases. second infection wasn't severe but wasn't nothing.

Right now the vaccine appears to create higher antibody titers than natural infection. So, probably, but I don't think we have definitive data which immunity is better. Perhaps there are other antigens on the virus that also cause antibody creation that assist the spike protein antibodies that mean natural infection creates better immunity, or maybe the higher antibody titer will do better.

Thanks man.

I was just asking.
Nothing else implied or suggested

Without diving into statistics; yes, you'll get longer than 2 months of effective immunity, and likely, imho, at least a year.
