How long do you want to ignore this user?
Played golf today and shortly after I get home a guy that was in the group texts me and tells me he just tested positive. He doesn't have symptoms, they only got tested because they were planning on traveling to visit family.

Should I be worried about being exposed? Didn't ride in the same cart, so the only time I was around him was tees and greens.

Should I get tested? If yes, how long after exposure do you get tested? This is really the first time anyone I know or have been around has gotten it so I don't really know what I should do.

I think you should be aware of possible exposure, but not terribly worried. We know that outdoor spread is not very common. If y'all maintained a >6 feet distance it's even less likely to be spread, and if you were within 6 ft, if it was for less than a cumulative 15 minutes, also low probability.

To the answer of if you should get tested, I wouldn't, unless I developed symptoms. But I'm also good about mask wearing and maintaining my distance from others, and am not around any high risk individuals.

If you want to get tested, you should get tested no sooner than 7 days post exposure. Any sooner and there is a high likelihood of a false negative and you end up with a meaningless test.

I would get tested after at least 5 days. I was exposed on 12/10 and tested on 12/12 due to a low grade fever and tested negative. Felt relatively fine for a week with minor symptoms I blew off as allergies only to test positive 12/20 when fever kept me in bed all day. Sounds like you should be fine but I'd get tested just to remove any doubt.

If you believe you were exposed it doesn't matter if you test negative, you still will be told to quarantine.

Pretty much my exact thoughts.

I guess my biggest question is should I treat it as an exposure quarantine wise until I decide to go ahead and get tested. I'm off this week but I'm supposed to be back Monday.

I'd say yes, if you meet the 6' 15 minute rule, then I would. If you're right on the fence, then being outdoors, I'd say you're probably ok to not quarantine. Unless, of course, he coughed in your direction outdoors while you were down wind, or something to that effect.

I'd play it safe but not go too crazy. I had outdoor dining with a buddy that tested positive two days later. I waited five and got tested. The rest of our lunch party golfed with him. None of us got it. I took some extra precautions and avoided public stuff but didn't shut down completely.

Science seems to shift on this but I thought most recently that asymptomatic spread was determined to be almost nonexistent.

I think that's going to depend on the next few days. If the friend shows symptoms soon, then it was presymptomatic and when you can be most contagious.

If you're not supposed to be at work until Monday, I would lay low this week and reevaluate Sat/Sun. If the friend doesn't show symptoms and if you don't show symptoms after 5 days it's probably okay. I would tell work that you were exposed on X date, meet the close contact definition, and see how they want to proceed. For what it's worth, my kid's school is letting them back at 7 days post exposure if they test negative after at least 5 days.
