How long does immunity last?

I'm looking for some recent studies/information on how long COVID immunity lasts after recovery. At one time, I remember reading 4 months with the possibility (with further study) that it could be longer and maybe much longer, now the CDC has backed off that and I can't find anything that tells me directly how long a person is safe.

I tested positive at the end of September and need to do some traveling for work within Texas. Wife was infected shortly after that. Are we still immune? Is it safe for me and my family?

Any medical opinions or links to current research will be appreciated!

BTW - This forum is my (and I suspect many others....) go to source for unbiased, accurate information on COVID. Thanks to everyone on this forum and TexAgs for making it available to us all, and especially the medical community for their continued help and posting of solid information and informed opinions on treatment, the REAL situation, options on treatment, and a myriad of other issues and news on COVID. God bless all of you!

Not a physician, but I'm not sure anyone knows yet. Just one data point though. My niece tested positive in June. She still tested positive for antibodies last week.

I can't promise your plane won't crash or you won't get hit by a bus, or you may even die of Covid, but if I were you I wouldn't think twice about going.

Safe is a relative term and everyone has different risk profiles. Unfortunately these days everyone wants their risk profile to be 0 even though the only guarantee we have in life is that one day we will die.

Some promising science to that end recently came out.

I personally wouldn't worry about it. There's a high likelihood that you have some antibodies and immunity. And even then, you can take precautions when you travel to be doubly safe.

I've been pretty cautious through this all, but I've still done some sensible travel without issue.

I know you are looking for studies. You might also search for 'covid re-infection'. That seems to be quite rare.

I have traveled extensively throughout this whole mess. I wouldn't think twice about it unless you are going to a large conference, spending multiple hours in large crowds.

The car drive or airplane ride is more risky IMO.

I have to agree with this, I have traveled several times, and unless you're traveling to the COVID ward of a hospital, I don't think there's much more risk involved in traveling than there is in just going out in public in your local community. If you're traveling by car, you're by yourself the whole time. If you travel by plane everyone is masked and the cabin air filtration systems are excellent, minimizing the risk there. The first time I traveled after this started made me a little apprehensive, but then you realize that it's not that big a deal.

I got it last February and have been able to lead a relatively free life the last 10 months. I am wondering when the 2nd infection will occur. 2 years, 5 years? It will be interesting!

The CDC allows for 90 days to be "immune" (I use that loosely, all it means is you don't have to quarantine after an exposure or test again) as long as you don't show symptoms. The science still isn't quite settled on re-infection (it happens but it's very rare). They do not have any hard evidence either way on whether you can still spread it in that 90 days if you've become exposed again.

FWIW, I would think this is true.

If you get Moderna vaccine...immunity last couple years.

As others have stated, the recent studies and articles are that they last a long time ...for years even. There are always outliers, but so very rare. Just google natural immunity of Covid and you will find a lot of very recent articles on recent studies (as some have already posted here). Here are a couple.
