(I know it's NPR - but get over it - the rest of the link were paid/blocked)

- basically what it says is that it the current Moderna Vaccine produces 6 times LESS anti-bodies against the South African Strain.

That sounds like a lot but then they say it is not that big a deal - it still works but will not put a number on it. Like does it move from 95% to 60% or 85%

Anyone got any info? Medical pros?

you won't get a comp to the stated 95% without a similar clinical trial

What does that mean... a comp... is that not what they found - 6 x less antibodies but the overall rate of effectiveness is still "effective"

What the heck does that mean?

comp is short for comparison

turn it back on you - how did they get the 95% number

wouldn't they have to do a similar test to get a similar number?

I know what comp means, boss - I mean why do they need a comp if they are already have an idea that it is 6 times less antibodies.

Shouldn't they have an effectiveness number?
Or at least an idea...

I think that's why they ran phase 3 clinical trials. to determine effectiveness.

But I'll let the real scientists give you a better answer to your question

Just wait until the South African variant combines with Ebola.... Ebovid 21. It is game over after that.

Wouldn't it be "fewer"?

Or in this particular instance, "FEWER"?

The media is having a field day with the continuous stream of fear porn. Stop being such a wet blanket.

I think the original post title probably shouldn't use the word "worst" as it is too subjective. That being said, I can tell you I am worried about this strain , B1.351, that is being called the South Africa strain. The one called UK isB.1.1.7. These strains seem to demonstrate that they are achieving dominance by outcompeting other strains quickly. Their mutations don't appear to be carried on by chance and indicate increased transmission . Multiple colleagues are also worried. Hopefully the anxiety is unfounded.

Increased transfusion?

Mutations not by chance?

can you explain?

oh okay for sure

what about the mutations not being by chance?

Some mutations are propagated by chance but some increase fitness of the virus. The two mentioned strains likely have increased fitness.

but those happened by chance

due to the numbers of cumulative infections and transmissions

Propagated by chance versus being more competitive in either survival or transmission. The initial mutations are all by chance. You aren't getting this are you? What needs to be explained?

I guess I'm just trying to get you to be more clear

I think what you're saying is that mitigation and treatment efforts are leading to vacc escape and more infectious strains

totally agree there

I'm just hoping I spelled out what you meant

I still would not wear a mask even for Ebovid 21.

Lockdowns are making the virus more lethal and more fit in that they last longer in the environment and are more transmissable.

the lockdowns need to stop now otherwise we will continue to see more strains like this crop up.

in order to transmit during a lockdown the virus must have better environmental survival and must be more infective requiring a lower viral load for infection.

this skews virus survival in the population to the more virulent, more transmissable, and the environmentally stable mutations.

until the lockdowns stop you will see the virus skew more and more this direction.
