Is it safe for my 90 year old grandmother to get the vaccine?

Hearing a lot of stories of people having issues with it. Do you think it would be safe for her to get it? She can schedule an app today and we are trying to decide. She is in pretty good health for being 90 years old.

I posted a thread a few weeks ago about how I couldn't get her signed up. Thankful she is eligible now.

Way safer than getting Covid.

Yes, it's safe. And it's several orders of magnitude more safe than her getting COVID.

My Mom at age 97 will have had both doses by Friday the 5th. No problems with the first, see what this weekend brings.

Welp, I guess we took too long in deciding. Got the email today but by the time I went to sign her up all the time slots were gone. Got her on the wait list. I thought she was already locked in since we had waiting three weeks and then got to email to schedule. Kinda strange.

You were the OP in a 2/1/21 thread about the death percentage. One poster provided an Infection Fatality Rate (IFR%) chart for both COVID19 and the flu for all ages. The IFR% for those 90 and above is 10%, or 1 FATALITY for every 10 infected persons aged 90 and above. I bet that exceeds any "stories" that you have heard...

Both of my elderly parents have it right now, going on week 2. Dad 91 and Mom 82. They are stubborn and hard headed and think they can ride it out. I am not sure what I can do for them other than to tell them to get to a doctor if they start having trouble breathing which they both say they can breathe fine.

FTR, I had this in December and it was mild to moderate for me.

Yes that is a great point. Unfortunately I missed the chance to sign her up today. I thought she was locked in since we got the email but all the time slots were gone by the time I tried to sign her up.

With the demand being so much greater than supply for the vaccine, you have to be able to find out about a vaccination program and then sign up within the first 20 or 30 minutes. Finding out is the key. I signed up for push alerts from local news channels. Listened to what seemed like a hundred irrelevant push alerts until I got one about a mass vaccination effort.

Your grandma likely cannot do it without you! I really appreciate the younger generation helping the olds get this done. Remarkable.

Look up the COVID cocktail that some of the doctors on here have published. Dr. Rev first published it in his stickied post above.

Anecdotal obviously but my 85 about to be 86 year old father has had both doses and 80 year old mom her first and they were totally fine. No side effects or next day illness. Had the Pfizer vaccine.

Yeah, that's going to happen. They're trying to get these shots in the arms of people, so they aren't emailing out one at a time. Our appointments filled up within 9 minutes in our county's last round of emails. If you want an appointment, you've got to jump on it.

Sorry, buffalo chip and others have recommended downloading the major news apps for Houston (KHOU, KPRC) and enabling push notifications. The apps will push out notifications when new vaccine appointments become available, usually with a phone number or link to go sign up. Chase those down the minute that you see them and you give yourself the best chance to break through. It seems these appointments go within minutes of becoming available.

In my case, I chased down a few lost causes before I broke through with Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. They had 16,000 doses available for 65+ and I was able to get my parents signed up within 10 minutes. Shortly after all the appointments were gone.

Now, I'm trying to work on my aunts/uncles and other elderly relatives.

It just happened. They pushed out a notice for 1,000 appointments available. It was gone in 15 minutes.

Awesome! I guess I would just need to download the local news station apps for Dallas.

Thank you for your help.

Got another email from the city of Dallas today after putting my grandmother on the waitlist this past Thursday. Have her scheduled for this Tuesday.
