"Young" healthy person getting vaccine

I've been pretty adamant that only those who truly qualify for the vaccine are the ones who should get it now, shouldn't try and see if they'll give you a shot even though you are under 65 with no qualifying issues but because you are better at online registrations than an 80 year old you got accepted.

People at work were saying you can sign up to be on the waiting list, even if you may not be eligible until May it's still good to get on the list so that they'll contact you when available. So I went off to register on a couple sites.

One was a hospital network and they just asked name, date of birth, and if you have any comorbidities. Just 3 or 4 questions, answered, it said I'd be contacted when I'm eligible - good, I'm in the system now and will want until March or later.

The other attempted registration was with the city's public health department, it asked around TWENTY questions. Including race, household income, on and on. Was asked if you worked in a nursing home OR if you live with someone who works in a nursing home. I do live with someone who works in a nursing home so I answered honestly.

At the end of this questionnaire they said I qualified NOW - only that "live with a nursing home worker" could have possibly qualified me.

I'm torn since I don't feel at risk at age 48 and no known issues, but at the same time the public health department says I do qualify. SHould I go?

Yes. Every person that gets a dose of vaccine, regardless of age, gets us one step closer to getting COVID under control.

If you have the chance to get the vaccine take it.

It accomplishes the same goal.

If you're torn, help others sign up to get the vaccine.

That's what I'm doing for older people I go to church with, since the process is too difficult for them.

yup. Take it without reservation. With the chance of and likelihood of mutated Covid virus variants around, the faster we all get at least 1 shot the better. And the fact that you also live with a nursing home employee, I think its a situation where you NEED to take it. If the public health dept says you're qualified, well, you're qualified.

The more shots in arms, the better. And the faster we get back to the REAL normal.

I personally wouldn't, given the current shortage. It's still so hard to get the elderly and at risk people in my life the vaccine. Working to get all my at risk family lined up before I worry about myself. They're poor, don't speak good English, don't know where to look for things, etc. The system is stacked against them.

Get it. My wife who's under 40 had the opportunity due to profession before her mom. D in I think that makes sense? No. But, I think anyone that can get it should.

If your significant other works in a LTC facility and you pass it to them that would put at-risk people exposed. The vaccine for you would help protect them.

Thanks for the different perspectives, I do want to see that elderly relatives - although they all live outside my geographic location - are at least signed up before I feel good about getting a shot myself. But protecting nursing home residents and the ability for health care workers to see them - without being quarantined or sick themselves - is a consideration as well.

My 16 year old son was just offered the vaccine today from Texas Children's. I suspect he qualifies under 1B because of his BMI (he is about 6'2" and 220-ish...always in the 97th or above percentile for weight, height, and BMI).

We are taking it for all of the reasons mentioned above and then some. Appt is Tuesday.

If you're somewhere and someone just "offers" the vacine...yeah, go for it. I also saw where someone was with their wife who was a physician or something, and they offered the husband while he was there. Fine with it.

I just hope healthy people under 60 aren't going to get in line, or searching to somehow get it done, when elderly are still trying to work it out. Wait your damn turn, you'll be fine anyway.

40 year old at work. No underlying issues. Also a Canadian citizen with a green card living here for 25 years. Gets it because he called the Canadian Console in Houston.

Heavy smoker.

Has had the first dose.

Yea thats screwed up.

Diabetic sister-in-law has registered at 4 different places and is still unable to get it. Same for my 78 year old mother in law.

But they are signed up on waiting lists and those places she has registered with DO say they qualify, correct? The two sites I signed up with were a bit different, one didnt say I qualified and indicated I would be contacted when I did qualify and spots for me were available - but I still have to reserve a slot, I don't think it auto-assigns one just because I registered and qualify. The other site I signed up with DID say I currently qualified but again, I still would have to register for a time slot when they become available and I believe that's difficult as so many people at once are hovering and waiting to grab the slots. I've only seen these two sites but from my limited experience it appears registering, and even qualifying, does not get you a vaccine shot reservation - that is an extra step. Good luck! I'd ask which sites they were registered on, and for their username and password, so I could help do that busy work of hovering and clicking when spots open up. But I'm guessing they don't want to share that with me.

This was my stance as well and was only registering on a couple sites to get my name in the system for when it was my damn turn, which I was assuming would be in April or later. But one site told me it was my damn turn, that was the surprise I was discussing on this thread. Unexpected.

Try Allen Fire Dept if they are in North Texas.

Thanks but we are in the Hill Country. They've registered in 3 different counties. Just have to wait.

Yeah, then go for it. I talked to my Dad last night, 85, that said he's still 2 more weeks out through the VA. So there's that.

I agree with the commentary here.

Another way to think about it - all the 65+ year olds have had well over a month to register. If they are not registered by now, they don't want or believe they need the vaccine.

You will not be jumping in front of anyone who really wants or needs it from that group at this point.

Go to this site and look at Weeks 7-9. Make sure that they are on the Hubs and Non- Hubs that are listed in weeks 7-8 if they aren't part of the above list. They may want to register at distributors that aren't listed here depending on where they live exactly.
The above list was taken from this site and is supposed to be a compilation of all distributors in Central Texas who will receive doses next week.

This is completely not true at all. I'm still trying to register my elderly family for vaccine appointments. The appointments window will open up and close so fast I can only get in one family member at a time it seems (yesterday I got my 80+ year old uncle, but not his wife my 80+ year old aunt).

Additionally, if I wasn't chasing it down for them they had no clue how to get a vaccine themselves. Go to the department of health website and you just get a bunch of links and numbers that are all dead ends - no appointments available. Wait lists with no end in sight.

In fact one of the only reasons I'm able to get my family registered is because I have a job where I'm fortunate to be able to sit on my computer and phone all day and wait for push notifications for vaccine appointment availability and sign up. The only reason I even know to do that is because someone on a message board from the college I went to said it was a good idea, because otherwise I was completely lost trying to navigate the health website.

Not doing this whole argument again but no. Vaccines for people under 50 that have a 99.98 chance of survival regardless of health should not be the same priority as people over 65 who have a 2.7% chance of death if infected.

Maybe in a month or two when at-risk people have had an opportunity
ExpressAg11

While you're absolutely correct that older people should get it first, anyone else that does get it also helps the cause. If we are truly trying to reach a herd immunity scenario, it's about quantity and getting as many people vaccinated as possible, regardless of age.

If the goal is to save as many lives as possible the priority should be those at risk and not wasting doses.

I am confused by those who say they cannot find the vaccine for their 65+ year old relatives. Anyone in Texas can register in Tarrant or Dallas County right now. I'm guessing there are other counties with online registration too that will vaccinate those from outside their county. I know Texas Motor Speedway is vaccinating 10,000 people a day drive thru in Denton County.

That is precisely what I did for all my elderly relatives. They have all gotten their first round and my parents are getting their second shot Monday.

I still hold that anyone 65+ or older in Texas ought to be registered and in line somewhere by now. Yes, it might involve travel. Yes it might involve inconvenience.

100% agree. When I can get a vaccine then I'm signing up. Not sure who "deserves" one more than the next person. That's a complicated analysis and it really shouldn't be based solely on a persons chances of succumbing to the virus.

I'm mid-40s no co-morbidities, don't work with high risk groups, etc. So I turned down the vaccine in December.

But I'm thinking I'll go in and get it next week. My father-in-law is elderly and lives in a country that's a medical wasteland so if he get's sick, our only hope of seeing him without entering a two week quarantine is to show we have been vaccinated.
