Apparently this was the biggest trial involving the drug. Prior trials had showed mixed results. A small benefit, but statistically significant.

Quote:

Among hospitalized patients requiring oxygen in the trial, there were 596 deaths in the group of 2,022 patients randomly assigned to take tocilizumab29 percent diedand 694 deaths in the group of 2,094 patients randomly assigned to standard care33 percent died. That's an absolute difference of 4 percent in deaths and a 14 percent drop in the relative rate of death.

I'll copy and paste what I stated in the anticoagulation thread.

Quote:

The RECOVERY trial just came out with a press release regarding toci in severe COVID. They found a mortality benefit in these patients. Absolute risk reduction for mortality was 4%, so a number needed to treat to prevent one death was 25 overall.

Toci will become the new standard of care for severe COVID based on these results along with steroids.

4 percent....one thing this last year has driven home to me is the power of big numbers when you are talking about percentages.

I've seen it work so I believe it. Sad thing is mos have gone bye with so many deaths. In my heart we could have saved a few with this drug.
