Wife is a nurse and needs vaccine but what about family?

My wife gave birth to our first born this fall. She was supposed to go back to work in December, but with the virus getting worse at that time and the mismanagement of her hospital/floor. She ended up quitting.

As we are approaching the end of breastfeeding, we are in need of the vaccine. Simply put, our family needs her income to help keep us afloat. Making matters more complicated is that her elderly parents also live with us.

She's so paranoid and concerned about going back to work and bringing home the virus. She knows she can probably easily get the vaccine, but still concerned about infecting two 70+ year old and a 4 month old baby also living at the house.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions? Everywhere we look - no appointments or vaccine available. I keep hoping the rollout will get better, but it's just a mess still. We are in San Antonio hoping HEB can come save the day.

There are some hospitals that are vaccinating family members of their staff. My wife's hospital does not, but I know others in DFW are doing it. She probably just needs to ask around.

But the point may be moot as the vaccine is becoming so widely available now.

She and her parents need to be looking into every available avenue to be vaccinated. Depending on H-E-B to save you is not a strategy. No one will knock on your door to ask if you want it. You have to put in some effort. It can be done.

I understand that. Which is why we are always checking walmart.com, HEB.com, trying to sign up for the Mass vaccine site at the Alamo Dome. We are calling people listed on the texas.gov site that has been listed, but we aren't hitting on any winners.

I guess I am just curious if there are other stones that we aren't turning over.

Look at rural counties about 100 miles out.

Is CVS vaccinating in San Antonio? They went live on Thursday in DFW. I made an appointment for my parents for Friday (yesterday). I know at least ten other people in Dallas area who have made appointments for today or this upcoming week at CVS.

Walgreens and Walmart are also places to check.
Look for a San Antonio Vaccine Finder group on Facebook. I joined one for DFW last week. That's how I heard about CVS going live.

Good luck!

get on all push notifications you can - news outlets, etc. If my MIL can manage to get herself an appointment then I'm sure you can also. Agree to look rural as well. Many people in the SA area who were super frustrated have managed to get their first scheduled/completed this past week. It should be getting easier. Of course the weather is a pretty big hiccup.

Read the thread linked below. Your wife and 70yo parents should be able to get their first vaccine next week (or maybe even today) but it will probably take you a few hours to grab appointments. It will be quicker/easier if you figure out on which day the HEBs in your area receive their new shipment, but appointments open up routinely as people miss theirs or cancel/reschedule. Many people are on multiple wait lists and will routinely drop or miss their appointment because they got the shot somewhere else.

You'll probably find an appointment faster if you're willing to drive or can get to a location within 30 minutes (they'll add last minute appointments if people skip or cancel late). Grab the first one you're willing to drive to and then you can keep looking for a closer opening.

For example, I just checked and there are appointments at the Marble Falls HEB (although they'll probably be gone by the time you read this, but others will open).

First, keep looking. You can probably get her and her parents vaccinated pretty soon. Hold on maybe for a few more weeks or so. Get on every list and don't be afraid to drive a bit to get your shots.

The 4 month old will be fine. It's the parents that are at risk here. That said and this is regarding your wife immediately being vaccinated before your parents can once she finds a job given she is in the medical field, I still have not seen ANY scientific evidence yet supporting the idea that a vaccinated person, after 10 to 14 days of dose 2 can spread the virus. Sure, it is not fully "known" yet but I think telling people that they can still spread the virus after full vaccination is more fear rhetoric designed to ensure the ones who haven't actually been vaccinated from lying about it to be able to go out, not mask and not have any limitations. Which is true. People will lie. But also does us no good b/c of the unnecessary fear it gives people. Once your wife is vaccinated, it seems to defy logic that she will be able to carry enough viral load to be much of a threat to her parents. Precautions can be masking in house, distancing or, and I get this is very personal and not at all trying to be disrespectful here, but having the parents move IF they truly are at risk. Depends, mine would be at 80+ but live in an active care facility. Obviously the age of her parents qualifies them for the vax too. But if your young family truly needs 2 incomes, it might be the only safe solution for her parents, just in case, if they can afford and are able to live separately. Are there other family members who could take them in if finances are the issue.

Finally, the fact still remains that the VAST majority of everyone will not die if infected. This is not a decision one can take lightly no doubt, but at the end of the day, keeping the house and food on the table and lights on when there is a little one involved, for me, is the MOST important thing.

If you're in San Antonio, head down to Carrizo Springs on Wednesday. My mom is on the hospital board down there and she said they get 1500 doses a week. They average around 100 left over every Wednesday, so a lot of random folks not on the list are able to get vaccinated.
