Not sure if this has been asked or discussed... if so please post link...

My wife and I would like to get pregnant in the next year. She would like the vaccine. I have my reservations... we're both healthy, early/mid 30s, wear our masks, social distance/avoid large crowds when possible, have been careful throughout this whole pandemic... not once have we been sick.

I personally do not want to get vaccinated YET... I am NOT anti-vaccine but considering we're healthy and at very low risk to get hospitalized or die, I don't think we should until we know the long term affects. Should our parents/grandparents or people w underlying conditions get it? I believe so, yes.

Now throw in my wife who could be pregnant soon. Do I want her to be vaccinated while we're pregnant or trying to get pregnant if we don't know the effects? I say it's not worth the risk... Thoughts?

So, we know young and healthy people generally do pretty well. But we also know that there are increased risks to pregnant women, and babies in the womb of pregnant women.

Also study participants in both Pfizer and Moderna were told not to get pregnant, and yet I think there were 17 pregnancies in the Pfizer trial. As of February 16th, there were 30k pregnancies reported between both Moderna and Pfizer.

Check out the safety data here: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/slides-2021-02/28-03-01/05-covid-Shimabukuro.pdf

Specifically check slide 32 onwards.

To summarize: If it was me, I'd rather get vaccinated before pregnancy than worry about COVID during pregnancy. Or even worry about vaccination during pregnancy (though that's looking to be pretty safe so far as well).

Getting vaccinated before getting pregnant is ideal. I would not be overly concerned if the timing wasn't perfect. Better to not get the virus while pregnant above all else.

Anyone know if there's any info on getting the vaccine while breastfeeding?

Seems like it would be awkward for the vaccine giver, but you do you.

As a woman, I'd much rather get vaccinated before getting pregnant. Much rather.

Be honest, does it really matter that you are a woman? As much of a pro-vaccine and COVID fear person as you are, you would accept getting the vaccine while making a baby if it was your only choice.

And I don't mean that as a slam. I just think it is fair to point out your exhibited biases. And btw, I agree with you that they would be wise to vaccinate now.

Yes it matters that I am a woman as only women actually carry babies and therefore approach that responsibility differently. That said, you are pretty much wrong on all fronts. I can't answer for sure what I would do if I were pregnant but my first instinct is I likely would not until more information was available. Since you think you know my thought process, you missed the fact that my caution is more about how my actions may impact others (which would include a child) as opposed to fear for myself.

I have been cautious but far from hiding under my bed. I have worked through out this, coming in contact with people I don't know every day. I mask under these conditions without issue. I do know people who have lost a healthy daughter in her late 20's, brothers and parents. I have friends who have been terribly sick and others who barely had a cold. Just because I believe in Covid doesn't make me a fear monger.

My wife and I are going thru the same issue- she is breastfeeding baby #1 and we are looking to have another next year, but not trying to get pregnant yet. Based on info from Pediatrician, ACOG studies, etc., we've determined it's probably best that she does get vaccinated, but we are planning the timing to be when she stops breastfeeding and we are not yet trying to get pregnant. That would put no risk on our baby and we would feel much better about getting it before rather than during her next pregnancy.

Praying for clarity and safety for both you and us!
