The sanitizer my family and I have used over the past year is at the top of the list. How worried should I be? Thankfully we don't use sanitizer very often but things like that scare me.

I had some of that art naturals stuff because it was what sam's was selling. I didn't use much of it because it smelled terrible and felt like you had rubbed a dead fish on your hands.

I still have 3 or 4 bottles I bought

Finding hand sanitizer that doesn't smell awful or leave tiny little balls of skin on your hands is difficult.

Huh, the bottle I have is unscented and seemed very pleasant.

Do you pump your own gas? Chances are you are exposed to more benzene and other carcinogens doing that than you are from hand sanitizer.

With that said, I use hand sanitizer very sparingly because it's just not necessary. If you wash your hands with soap, that is more than sufficient. And it's absolutely unnecessary and overkill to wash your hands and then immediately use hand sanitizer.

I would avoid the brands specifically called out in that story, but overall, this is not something that you should be overly concerned or lose sleep over. And if a hand sanitizer is petrochemical-derived (as opposed to an alcohol made via fermentation), not entirely surprising.

Edit: I saw you've been using one of the brands for a year. I still wouldn't be concerned, mainly because there is nothing you can do about it.

Remember, the dose makes the poison. Typically, the limits for contaminants like that are set WELL below the amount that can actually do any harm. So, even if you used one of the brands with the highest amounts, you weren't likely to be exposed to enough of it to cause cancer.

Thanks. Trying not to be super paranoid. I don't like to use sanitizer, but used more than usual in the last year. Still, for my family of 6, I think we have only used 8 oz of the stuff in the past 9 months. Hoping that little amount, spread out over a year, is not concerning, especially for my littlest ones.

Very true. I worked in the petrochemical and refining industry for a long time. In some jobs I was required to wear a personal monitor for benzene on a random basis where at the end of the day I would turn it in to the industrial hygienist for analysis. One day she called me and said the results were very high for the previous day and started to question what I had done. None of my activities should have resulted in exposure so she asked if I had gone home for lunch, which I always did. Then she asked if I filled my car with gas and when I said I did she just casually said that was the reason and we could stop talking about it.

Anyone who pumps their own gas is exposed to more of this in a year than a lifetime of hand sanitizer use.
