Waiting for PCR results of inlaws in Venezuela....

They are age 69 decent health and had negative rapid tests, but extremely high Ferritin levels. The father 1200 ug/l and mother 1675 ug/l (1675 ng/ml) below.

Their 17 y/o daughter tested pos with mild symptoms in same household. They are having no symptoms at moment, so I'm scratching my head with such high level of Ferritin given the correlation to covid. The family down there is super worried as Venezuelan docs are harping on high Ferritin level as likelihood of bad case of covid.

Any thoughts from docs here? Have yall seen this high Ferritin levels frequently?

That's nothing in a symptomatic COVID patient TBH. I've seen numerous patients with ferritins well over 5000 in the acute setting.

And in terms of macro population trends yes, higher ferritins tend to be seen in more severe disease but this isn't a hard and fast rule. If a patient with mild symptoms and only a high ferritin with nothing else came in I wouldn't give it too much thought. Treat the patient, not the labs. If all their acute phase reactants were super high and they were a high risk patient I might monitor them in the hospital as their chances of progressing to more severe disease are higher but again, it's not a given. I've seen plenty of people with ferritins that high and higher never have more than mild symptoms.

ferritin is a "helper" lab. That is all.
