Why are you going to the Emergency room rather than your doctor or an urgent care first for what you presume to be a virus? Good luck with that $1500 bill for a couple swabs and a tylenol.

Just the other day I had to talk a family of 10 off the ledge to not bankrupt themselves (presuming they actually paid) by all of them checking in because one of them tested positive for COVID.

My copay is like $150. I don't think it's either, but I want someone to figure it out.

I don't really do doctors so I don't have a primary.

How come no one wants to guess?

Have you been in a lake, river, or ocean in the past 3 weeks, either with an open wound or under water? The encephalitis possibility is very concerning. Is the doc concerned about amoebas?

Took my wife's Doc 5 weeks to diagnose West Nile last summer.


It can be pretty bad for some people. Wife ran a fever multiple times a week for 5 months, along with brain fog...etc

This is why we need to start pushing HSA/FSA plans more. It's easy to not care what an ER trip costs if you have a low copay. Not caring what it costs is what leads to it being $1500 without insurance.

No - they said the symptoms I have are common to west Nile, but given how high the fever is - the west Nile could be causing encephalitis or meningitis (apparently happens in about 1% of cases). Hopefully not.

Yep, just need a good referral. Was the doctor who did yours any good?
