Get to Reed. Us vs them. The good guys vs the bad ones. Maroon vs ugly burnt orange. Good vs evil. Top ten matchup. 1st place in the SEC on the line. Friday night. Halloween. Your fightin' Texas A&M Aggie Volleyball team will take on those orange people from austinville in an electric top ten matchup in Reed Arena at 6:30.
Make your halloween plans around Aggie Volleyball. Head to the match in your blue costume, your sexy nurse costume, just not in a t-shirt sip fan costume! Candy will be passed, costumes will be worn, and great volleyball will be played.
While Texas A&M is off to probably its best start in history with a 17-3 record and a 9-1 record in conference play. The Aggies will host a hot tu team that is undefeated, has 9 ranked teams, the probable freshman of the year, they've swept Creighton, swept Wisconsin, swept, Arizona State, swept TCU, swept Baylor, and they're beating their sec opponents in sets 30-5. What a shame if all of that came crashing down Friday night (evil halloween laugh).
It's going to be important that we play our best volleyball. tu has one of the most efficient and lethal offensive attacks in the country. They have one of the best outside hitters in the nation in Torrey Stafford. A Pitt transfer, she is averaging over 4.33 kills per set and is extremely lethal. They also have two freshman pin hitters in Cari Spears and Abby Vander Wal who have excellent height and a crazy swing. However lethal they may be at the net, their strength is their back row play. They have two of the best in the nation in Emma Halter and Ramsey Gary. They are cat-quick and really set their offense up efficiently.
Their weaknesses (if any) are in the middle, they have some excellent middles, but it's what we took advantage of them last year. We really need to set our middles early to stretch out their defense. I really expect Ifenna Cos-Okpalla and Morgan Perkins to have lots of kills Friday, it's a must if we want to win. While their setter Emma Halter is great. Her job is easy setting to All Americans. If we can serve hard, like Stanford, Louisville, and Tennessee did against them, then I like our chances. All those matches went to 5 sets. In our match against them last year in Austin, that's what really propelled us to victory. We know Ifenna can serve, but hopefully we see other girls step up from the service line. We'll need at least 3 per set.
Our strength is our versatility. When we can get clean first touches, Maddie Waak can orchestrate an efficient attack that sees the ball going to multiple hitters. We all know Logan Lednicky can take over a match and this might be a night where we need 30+ kill Logan to show. However, we'll really need to see our other outsides shine. Kyndal Stowers has the explosiveness to hit over anyone, but watch for her 10 foot line attack with a sharp angle. Hellmuth has struggled in matches against a tall block, so we'll need her to tool the block or find holes in the defense. This is where setting our middles can help tremendously because it will open up lines for Hellmuth and Stowers.
While the stats aren't anything extraordinary, tu can really serve with some velocity and spin. Their liberos both serve extremely well as does Halter and Stafford. So we'll need clean first touches from Underwood and Applegate as well as the rest of the team in serve receive. If we can run our offense we should be able to get points efficiently and get this match going our way.
Tu is one of the best in the country when in system, but dangerous out of system as well thanks to the athleticism and talent of their hitters. There won't be easy points against this team so we'll need to be efficient from the service line and at the net. Our block will most important. We're gonna need a career night blocking from our middles and outsides. It's the only way to slow them down. It's Halloween so we'll need to hear a lot of Monster Block chants!
It's going to be a fight on Friday. It's going to take intense focus and the best of our ability. It's also going to take you, all of us. We need to pack that stadium and be loud. Let's stand behind our girls and put some fear into those longhorns. I have a good feeling about this match. Let's go shock the volleyball world and BTHO tu and saw some varsity's horns off!! #PackReed
