Pre-game Thoughts: Texas A&M vs. DePaul
Five Thoughts from Tom Turbiville
1. It being 19 months since I lived in College Station and six years since the last Aggie women's game I called on the Radio, far be it from me to pretend I'm knowledgable about the Aggie team. (Yes Karla Gilbert was a sophomore at A&M Consolidated when I hung it up after A&M's 53-45 Elite Eight loss to Tennessee in 2008 at Oklahoma City).
2. As background, I lived in B/CS for 29 years, spent four years as A&M's Sports Information Director under Jackie Sherrill, and spent 24 years on the radio, the last 19 with WTAW as Morning Show co-host and Sports Director. I also called A&M Women's hoops from from 1993-94 to 2007-08, with a two year hiatus in the middle.
That was Lynn Hickey's final season, five years with Candi Harvey, four with Peggy Gillam and three wonderful seasons with Gary Blair. In August of 2012, I retired from WTAW and moved to Beatrice, Nebraska to be closer to three grandkids. Beatrice is about 35 miles due south of Lincoln.
3. When it was announced more than a year ago that the new Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln would host the 2014 NCAA Women's Regional, my first thoughts were, I hope the Aggies a) make the dance, b) be assigned to the Lincoln Regional and c) make it out of their sub-regional at Reed Arena. WHOOP!! I hit the trifecta!!
4. So here I sit, front row of the media section, next to my dear friends Mike Wright and Steve Miller, with nothing to do but watch hoops and type one more thought.
5. Thanks to Gabe Bock, my former Asst. Sports Director at WTAW, for scoring me a credential for this event. I've gotten to reunion with Coach Blair, Mike, Steve, Radar Ricke, and Erich Burch and meet some magnificent young ladies for the first time.
