Manziel Minute: Insight from Cleveland radio analyst

Key quotes from Dustin Fox interview

"There seems to be a story line everyday, this guy is a polarizing figure. It’s exciting times."

"When we drafted Johnny we speculated, what if somehow the Cavs got Lebron back and now here we are. There are billboards of both of them around town doing the money sign and people love it."

"He is going to get onto the field at some point. They didn’t draft him in the first round to ride the bench. When he gets an opportunity he has to play well and if he does it is going to ignite the city and the NFL."

"For his first game situation I was impressed. I didn’t know for sure how his game would translate, when all of a sudden the plays broke down like they did in college, would he be fast enough to get away? He threw a pass on a deep dig from the pocket and proved he has the arm strength to make that throw."

"Johnny played six series and ran six times. If he plays 12 series is he going to run 12 times? Do that math throughout the season and can he take those hits? In those six series on Saturday night, after the second series he was getting checked for a rib injury. He has to be smart and learn to not take the hits."

"I thought that Johnny had changed his lifestyle leading up to the draft. TMZ didn’t have stories about him. After the memorial weekend and the swan, the money phone, I had some concerns; I said the kid needed to mature. You want to be the face of a franchise you have to have a different take on things and he seemed to be a bit defiant with the media here."

"Things certainly changed when he sat down with the owner and since the camp has begun he has been a model citizen. He has been great with the fans and his teammates seem to be buying into what he’s about. So I’ve become more of a fan. I want him to be as successful as he can possibly be."

"Mark Snyder was my coach at Ohio State and he kept telling me, 'This guy is legit. When the season comes, you’ll see what I’m talking about.'"

"I think he starts against the Redskins this week. It is only fair if you are going to have a true competition for him to get some reps with the ones."

"If I’m the Browns, you take all the excitement you can get. If he is going to get reps with the ones anyway, let him start."

And I'm willing to bet that the rib injury came from getting drilled in the pocket on that second series. I remember the play. He got credit for standing in and delivering the throw under pressure, and that's when he got hit the hardest. It wasn't from his running.

I'm pretty sure it came after a run of about five yards when he dove head first. Seemed to be wincing a bit on the way back to the huddle. After that he ran out of bounds or slid feet first.

I only remember him diving head first on one play. There was a 3rd and short, and they ran a zone read to the left, where he dove into a group of 2-3 Lions (short of the first down). That was on his first drive, and if anything was hurt it wasn't his ribs.

Maybe there was a different run that I don't recall. There was a long one up the middle and he slid, and the one on 4th and 1 where he could have passed it to the fullback. Three more runs, and now I can't remember what they were. But the hardest hit he took was on a pass. He got drilled in the ribs and winced when he hit the ground. Who knows...
