Texas A&M Baseball
Get to Know ... Aggie baseball 3B Ronnie Gideon
On what the future holds for the team…
“It’s going to be a great year. We’re really good offensively and it’s going to be a fun year.”
On his progression as a player over the last year…
“I’ve progressed a lot. It’s not just me but our coaches and our players, you know everyone helps out everyone here. This summer I broke my foot so I was off most of the summer but I got back into it towards the end and worked really hard to get back.”
On his father working for the Colorado Rockies while a kid…
“It’s amazing. It’s every kids dream to be there and to have that. To be able to have that and grow up with that and be able to understand the game is awesome. It’s one of those things that every kid wishes they could have. It’s one thing to never take for granted because if you do, then that’s when they take it away. It’s amazing and it’s really fun.”
On the impact his dad has had on his career…
“Oh everything. He is everything that I am. They said I was born with a baseball in my crib. Ever since I was born they took me out to the games, I never missed a spring training my entire life until last year when I was here. As much as I can get around him and do baseball whenever he’s home, it’s all we do. It’s baseball 24/7.”
On quitting high school football to focus on baseball…
“It really wasn’t (a difficult decision). I kind of had an idea my junior year that I was going to. It’s what I thought was best for me in the future and the long run and I didn’t want to put that in jeopardy and hurt myself my senior year. Yeah, I love football and sometimes I look back and wish I hadn’t quit but it was a tough process at the beginning but then once I found out what I wanted to do and I made a commitment here at A&M it was easy and I just said that it’s one thing you’ve got to put aside.”
On choosing A&M…
“I came here and you know when the light bulb flips on. The coach staff, the facilities, everything was amazing. You look around at the field now and there’s really not a better facility that you can play at at this level. Having that, and having the ability to come here and not only the fan base, but the players here are amazing. It was probably by far the easiest decision I’ve made that has to do with baseball. They came in here told me all about it, showed me everything and I was like hands down this is the place I want to be.”
On being drafted out of high school…
“It definitely crossed my mind to go pro, that was a tough decision. It would have been a great opportunity to go play professional baseball out of high school and a lot of people take that chance, but if things aren’t just right then they come to school and it’s never a bad thing to get an education.”
On winning the Punt, Pass and Kick contest as a kid…
“That’s one of the biggest memories I’ve had as a child. I did it ever since I was seven years old until I was 15 and never lost a single year. It was fantastic. The one time I went, I went in last place and was just going to go up there and have fun and I ended up winning. Other than that it was great.”
On his superstitions…
“I do. I actually have a superstition with Ryne Birk. Me and him do the exact same thing everyday before games. After we get done eating, we come and change and we get in the hot tub. After we get out of the hot tub we get dressed and go hit. After we hit we come back and take our gloves off and I run on the treadmill for 5 minutes while he is stretching in the locker room. After that we go and get dressed and come up here and play catch.”
