The Time is Now: Making the case for Kyler Murray

October 28, 2015

If not now, when?

If now isn’t the right time for Texas A&M football coach Kevin Sumlin to insert heralded freshman quarterback Kyler Murray into the starting lineup, then when is?

Starter Kyle Allen struggled terribly in consecutive losses to Alabama and Ole Miss. He completed just 32 of 74 passes with four interceptions — three returned for touchdowns — in those games.

There is the fear that he gets rattled in big games. There is speculation that he’s injured. There is the reality that his offensive line is struggling to provide adequate protection.

There is also the possibility that he’s distracted by the presence of Murray and the threat of being replaced.

Sumlin seemed to allude to that at his weekly press conference.

“It’s hard to play that position looking over your shoulder all the time,” Sumlin said. “Without confidence, it’s hard to play quarterback.”

It’s harder from the sidelines.

Put yourselves in Kyler Murray’s cleats. He could have joined any college football program in the country. He chose Texas A&M, presumably, because his father was a star quarterback here and Sumlin’s offense seemed perfect for his skill set.

Alex Parker, TexAgs Last season Kevin Sumlin decided to give a freshman QB his chance when overhaul was needed; he could do it again. {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"left","Size":"large","Caption":"Last season Kevin Sumlin decided to give a freshman QB his chance when overhaul was needed; he could do it again.","MediaItemID":60090}
Of course, he would have to win a competition against Allen, the sophomore incumbent starter who showed tremendous progress after moving into the starting lineup this time last season.

But Allen seems to have regressed. In last week’s loss to Ole Miss Allen endured a stretch in which he completed only two of 22 passes for minus-three yards. A&M managed only three points — and those should be credited to Myles Garrett for an interception that set the Aggies up in field goal range.

You saw that. So did Murray.

He has to be wondering if he cannot start now, then when?

We all know what Murray did at Allen High School. He took over as starting quarterback midway through his sophomore year and the Eagles never lost a game on the way to posting three state championships. He was a dual-threat quarterback who routinely torched defenses with his throwing ability and his running ability.

Yes, that was high school. High school greatness doesn’t necessarily transfer to collegiate greatness. There’s no guarantee that Murray is the next Johnny Manziel.

There’s no guarantee he’s not, either.

Why not give him the chance to show what he can do in a full game — not with a series here and there. Not taking him out of the game if he fails to make a big play.

Some say he has a bad attitude. You’ve heard the story: Murray reportedly cursed at Offensive Coordinator Jake Spavital during the loss to Alabama two weeks ago. Consequently, Murray was suspended and did not play in the painful loss to Ole Miss.

Without giving details, Sumlin acknowledged as much. He also said Murray would compete with Allen and Jake Hubenak throughout practice this week for the right to start against South Carolina on Saturday.

“Kyler has done the things necessary that we’ve asked him to do based on what happened on the sideline,” Sumlin said. “Hopefully, that’s been a learning experience for him.”

Sumlin said this week in practice he’ll be looking for the quarterback that demonstrates consistency, leadership and an acceptable demeanor. That seemed to be a message directed at Murray.

Murray may not be the answer to solve A&M’s offensive issues. Sumlin stressed that A&M’s problems weren’t because of one guy. That’s true.

The offensive line has also struggled. The Aggies are ranked 96th in the nation in rushing. They’re 109th in sacks allowed with 21. Those are the statistics of a woeful offensive line.

Brandon Jones In very limited action Murray has flashed the running ability and spark that made A&M's offense with Johnny Manziel so dangerous. {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"right","Size":"large","Caption":"In very limited action Murray has flashed the running ability and spark that made A\u0026M\u0027s offense with Johnny Manziel so dangerous.","MediaItemID":59741}
But if you can’t run or protect, why not go to a quarterback who is a bona fide rushing threat? In limited action Murray has rushed for 92 yards. He’s also showed the ability to escape pressure, extend plays and complete a pass on the run.

The greatest weapon in college football is a good passer that’s also a dangerous running threat. Manziel proved that. So did Cam Newton, Marcus Mariota, Tim Tebow, Vince Young, J.T. Barrett … well, you get the idea.

South Carolina has problems stopping the run. Murray may be A&M’s best option to exploit that weakness.

If he excels then you may have found a solution to the offensive problems. If he struggles, at least you know he’s not ready.

Equally important, he’ll know he’s not ready.

Then you could go back to Allen or look to Jake Hubenak.

Last year Allen made his first start on Nov. 1 against Louisiana-Monroe, an opponent the Aggies figured to beat even with an inexperienced true freshman at quarterback.

South Carolina fits that mode. So, why not give Murray a chance?

If not now, when?

Absofreakinlutely.

You hate it for Allen, but it's time to see what Kyler can do. Hand him the ball for an entire game and see what he can do.

Well, that seals it. The Sumlin regime is manufacturing consent. Kyler will start.

Sumlin will start Kyler. My question is how short/long will the leash be before we see #7?

What is the point of changing QB's of Spav is still running the offense? I'm sorry, but I'd prefer Kyler to sit and let him learn from a new OC next year instead of getting ruined by Spav this year. The only thing left to play for this year is a bowl game, which is easily attainable, so leave Kyle in, bc handing off to Tra and throwing stupid WR screens will have the same result with either of our QB's.

Last week: Dare to be Bold KA!
This week: KA is yesterday's garbage, out with the old in with the new.

That about right?

Last week Olin was pumping KA, so it's difficult for me to give his opinion any credibility. Politicians flip flop less than he does. And I agree with the poster who said it doesn't matter because Spaz will ruin another QB.

Just another hit piece on Allen. All of the buzzwords slipped in for the subtle effect to tear down Allen. I don't think I ever remember a player so badly mistreated by media, staff and a fan base.

This is all Beyond stupid. After trying to assassinate Kyle on national TV the media dial up another attack. From the TV football announcers, sports reporters and daddy Mureay finding a way to get a msg accross the radio waves. There is a full court press to get Kyler to play inspite of knowing KA has won the starting position week after week.

Kyler will not be Manziel. Kyler will not be a NFL QB. Kyler can't even earn the starting the starting position under a coached that promised he would get play time without earning it.

So the Aggies will continue to suffer mediocrity at their own hand. Part of me wants KA to ask for a release and move on to a team and a fan base that will actually appreciate him.

Mr. Allen, I am sorry but your son has gone full Matt Schaub. You never go full Schaub. I appreciate your son is probably the better pro prospect but for us to win I believe Kyler is better with what we have in o line and offense overall. I said from the beginning Kyler had the best shot to beat bammer. If your son leaves then that sucks but it's about the team winning and the guys that give you the best chance.

Have you even watched how Kyle Allen has played the last 2 games? How can you honestly defend him. Even in our wins it is not like Allen has been some big time stud. He played 3 quarters of bad football vs ASU, and honestly missed numerous throws against Arkansas. Yes his numbers were good vs Arkansas but it really wasn't a great performance. Mississippi state was a good performance I cannot deny that. Spav refuses to use Kyler as anything more than a change of pace or wildcat type of QB. You know how hard it is to come in and be a spark? At least knowing you have to be the spark or you are going back to the bench. I think this is where a lot of his reckless play comes from. Spav refuses to give Kyler the playbook. Its like the mentality of a starting pitcher in baseball, not all of them can come in out of the bull pen and be good. Mentalities are vastly different! Now is the time to start Kyler and see what he has. If he flops hey oh well we really are not in any worse position that we are now. At least then both Kyler and us know he isn't ready.

Destroy one undeserving QB and begin the destruction of another, courtesy of an idiot OC...all in one fail swoop. Pure genius.

Bottom line...we have to have a dual threat qb. It's the only way this offense is going to work. Kyler is the guy. He had not looked ready in the limited action he's seen but desperate times call for desperate measures.

By the way...am I the only one underwhelmed with RSJ? Physical specimen but he can't catch.

I hate to say it, but I totally agree with FCBlitz. The MEDIA & STAFF were continuously threatening Kyle Allen the entire time and especially in the first 4 games. I noticed it. Everybody noticed it. And, the Media ate it up---pitting each QB against each other with their cameras on Murray every time Kyle made one tiny little misstep, commenting in the early games continuously ad nauseum. It was disgusting.

The backlash is that the team started taking sides, and MURRAY was an instigator in all this. Arguing and hollering at a Coach shows no class, especially when done publicly. Murray acted like a spoiled brat. As a result, it put TOO MUCH PRESSURE on Kyle Allen. HIs parents must be livid at what has happened. And, who are the losers? Texas A&M football, the fans, and two QB's that could have been treated much differently.

It really wasn't fair to Kyle Allen, a 5 star recruit himself who could have gone anywhere, and probably WISHED he'd gone somewhere else by now. The sad part about all this is that the very thing SUMLIN desired was a major win against the big guys, and as a result of whatever "deals" he made with Murray, it has entirely back-fired on Sumlin. Tearing apart the team with misplaced loyalties to the QBs was a sad unnecessary outcome of all this. The team suffered, and Kyle Allen suffered. Murray should have been red-shirted, period, end of story. The team would have rallied around Kyle, and if Kyle had any problems, physical or mental, we had Hubenak as a back-up. But, it didn't happen that way, and throw in an ineffective OC, and this is what we get.

I don't know if Sumlin can salvage this QB (Allen), but imho, he had better find a way.

It is clear you don't have a 5 star QB turned into a 1 star QB in just two games. Kyle Allen must be feeling pretty devastated inwardly but is not the kind of guy who will show it. He has CLASS.

What is UNFAIR now is that we have a pretty easy game coming up, and Kyle Allen won't have the chance to regain his confidence, to try and survive this mess. You see, SPAVITAL is who I blame for poor play-calling, and for causing this QB mess, for calling NFL PRO call plays that were difficult for any 19 year old to complete. I didn't realize this until I read another article pointing this very thing out. They are right.

But, Murray will whine and whine till he gets his way. Just watch him fall on his face against LSU. I can hardly wait, and THEN, I hope Kyle Allen will get that chance to redeem himself, and with a team that will truly get behind him, but can he please GO AGAINST these ridiculous play calls of Spavital? Just hope Sumlin will allow Kyle to then change the play calls at the line of scrimmage like Mike Leach allows his QB to do.

THEN WATCH THE "RHYTHM" COME BACK!!!

Makes sense to start Murray so when we lose the rest of the sec games the coaches can justify the loses with the "he's a young quarterback, he will get better with experience" BS excuses. Hubenak should get the start in my mind for the next game.

When he stops putting simple passes in the dirt and arm punting deep balls to safeties. It isn't that complicated.
