Following their first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, the A&M baseball team (8-1) got back to winning ways against Houston Baptist (4-4), downing the Huskies 12-5.
Zach DeLoach notched four consecutive walks in as many plate appearances and added an eighth inning hit to finish the day. His four walks were one shy of the A&M school record. Second baseman Bryce Blaum attributed DeLoach’s patience keen ability to get on base on Tuesday night to both patience and having a good eye.
“I don’t think I have ever seen someone get four walks in a game,” Blaum said. “The guy has a great eye, probably the best on the team. He was looking for a pitch to hit and he didn’t get it so he took his his base.”
Sophomore Chandler Jozwiak registered a stellar performance from the bump, striking out eight and allowing just a single earned run. The southpaw was pulled after 4.1 innings pitched in order to allow him to be available to relieve Asa Lacy against TCU on Saturday.
“He got the change-up going there in the middle innings and he was really good,” Childress said. “Usually when he comes out there in the middle innings he’s a two-pitch guy, but he was really able to get the change-up going which allowed him to have some success and quick innings.”
Joseph Menefee had his first multi-inning outing against the Huskies. The freshman entered the game in the seventh inheriting a runner on first. Menefee retired the next three batters in order including two strikeouts. The Katy-product fanned four and didn’t allow a hit in 2.0 innings pitched.
“He’s still less than a year off of Tommy John surgery, and to be doing what he’s doing is remarkable in itself,” Childress said. “He’s not just a pitcher either – he can hit and he has a great feel for the game.”
Hunter Coleman, who suffered an injury on February 17, trotted out to first base in the seventh inning in place of Aaron Walters. His brother, Ty, held down the other corner at third base. Childress expects to have more additions to the lineup this weekend in the Shriner’s College Classic.
“Getting Hunter and Ty back was huge, and they will be available tomorrow,” Childress said. “We’ll get Cam Blake back tomorrow and we’ll get more of a lineup we’ll like to see.”
The Aggies will have one more tune-up before their big slate of games this weekend as they host Incarnate Word at Olsen Field. The game will be televised on SEC Network+ with first pitch set for 6:32 p.m.
