Texas A&M DT Daylon Mack selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round
Daylon Mack, who arrived at Texas A&M as a five-star recruit, leaves as a fifth draft choice.
The 320-pound defensive tackle from Gladewater was selected on Saturday by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round as the 160th overall pick.
Mack provides the Ravens with a run-stuffing anchor with a surprising quickness to beat offensive linemen at the line of scrimmage and post tackles for loss.
In an up-and-down career, Mack posted 108 tackles with 27 accounting for 110 yards of losses. That included eight sacks.
Once considered a potential first-round selection until a couple of subpar seasons as a sophomore and junior, Mack rebounded as a senior to post 32 tackles. Ten were for lost yardage and 5.5 were sacks. He played a significant role in A&M ranking third in the nation in run defense.
Mack flashed that enormous potential as a freshman when he posted 17 tackles with more than half (9.5) resulting in lost yardage.
He showed a knack for breaking up running plays by frequently making contact at the handoff exchange between the quarterback and running back.
Whether it be problems with his weight, a defensive scheme that did not play to his strengths or just basic self motivation, his production declined the next two seasons.
As a sophomore, Mack managed just 25 tackles and just 2.5 for loss. His tackles total dipped to 19 his junior year, though 5 were for losses.
However, he appeared rejuvenated by the arrival of coach Jimbo Fisher and the new scheme of Defensive Coordinator Mike Elko.
He lost weight in the offseason and then played at a high level during the season.
He blocked a field goal against Louisiana-Mornoe. He had two tackles for loss and a sack against Arkansas. He had a sack against Kentucky and two sacks against LSU. He finished the season with 32 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and was named the Aggies’ most improved defensive lineman.
